Winter 2024-2025: Chance of Colder & Snowier Winter

At this point, NYC has had three straight winters with extremely below average snowfall with the last 4 out of 5 winters having under 20 inches of snow (2019-2020 giving us 4.8 inches). I believe all weather patterns have a long term equilibrium much like everything in physics that balances everything out in the end, and hopefully we will see an opposite pattern developing for the next several winters❄️. Just wishful thinking as of now.

I believe you guys had a measly 2" in 22-23. Not much better here in NJ.

Theres the law of independent trials, and we have a moderate la nina in in the making for this winter. Also -I dont want to argue for or against manmade climae change here- but there is an obvious multidecadal trend toward increasingly warm winters in some parts of the world, that includes the eastern US. I wouldn't expect much in the tri state this winter.

In the past 5 years in northern VA, snowfall has been below average 4 times, with 2 of them bringing less than an inch of snow. We are overdue for a cold and snowy winter

New Jersey had 3 consecutive mild, underperforming winters with well below-average snowfall. Old Man Winter, if you give NJ another mild winter, I will chase you down ... all the way to Siberia!

Moderate la nina seems most likely at this point, and the eastern seaboard has been trending towards increasingly milder winters over the past several decades. It seems a lot more likely that we will see less snow than the long term average.

We're not due for anything. Nature has no system of checks and balances for specific man-made metrics.

Every late freaking summer theres a cohort of people who cherry pick their favorite historical averages, teleconnections and long range model guidances to construct a strangely recurring wintet forcast that inevitably fall apart like the card houses they are. Some are genuinely wishcasting and i get it, i love to fantasize about the best possible winter setups and scenarios, but you gotta stay grounded, and thats difficult to do i'll admit. But what really bothers me are the cynical people who knowingly do this, and make it into clickbait to prey on wishful and niave people.

Honestly, I'm not that eager for this winter. Last winter wasn't much fun because winter sports were too expensive!
