Update on in ground and potted figs and other fruit in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Big cold front this last week and colder than normal weather. A lot of issues we need to be aware of during our winters. No cookie cutter approach with this hobby.

Dude, some advice about the bark on your trees: that may not be cold damage, or not 100 percent: paint your trunks! Use that protective white paint they sell just for this purpose. I forget the name off the top of my head. But that could be at least partly sun damage you're seeing.

Maybe cover all your trees with a massive greenhouse?

I'm west of Eugene, growing mostly King fig and chestnuts. We had less cold and ice 25 degrees F. The King ripen in August, so fall rains don't split them. Experimenting with citrus, but more protection needed than figs. My ground drainage is better, but most are planted on a slope to drain. Your trees are very young, so less cold tolerant IMHO, once they get thicker stems, you might be much better off, especially if you put a bit of perf pipe in for drainage down on your lower end?

I recommend LSU Gold over the golden rainbow or golden riverside.LSU gold just as big and it did not split on me after multiple rain that we had. Also it grows super fast.

The good thing is I have a lot of honey figs. I’m really not worried about it.

Ditch a bit, or drain tile?

Hi There, I am from Portland area we have a 7-8 year old Lattarula fig tree which produces 2 crops quite reliably. But the flavor is hit or miss may be 2 fruits out of 20 has robust flavor. The tree had gotten too big and I pollarded it so it can be managed at easy picking height. I have some space next to this tree and looking for some recommendations on what to plant, really want to taste some of the varieties people love yet something that will fruit reliably like the Lattarula.

I’d look into desert king, de tres esplets, ronde de Bordeaux, and longue D’aout. Good luck!

@@Loftinart thanks. Desert King is pretty well known. Are the three similar to DK in terms of producing consistency?

Desert king will only give you breba. RdB and DtE are early enough for main crop. LdA will give two crops

@@Loftinart Thank you, I am wondering if you have any spare plants or cuttings of LDA and DTE that you are open to part. I am just outside PDX and happy to pay for them.
