I have been winter riding since the early 90's In Montreal . You dont need fat tires just some cyclocross tyres . 90 %of the time the roads are clear and wet rather than icy and snow covered. I even spent 3 years as a courier so yeah winter riding is no big deal.
@notthegoatseguy6 жыл бұрын
I don't know how things are in Canada, but even in our winter-heavy states, our local and state governments tend to wait until people start dying or cars start wrecking before serious plowing and treating the roads even begins. Maybe Canada does it better.

Ragi Ullrssman I live in Texas and I commute on a fatbike because it's a fatbike😄 Ironically, it is snowing as I type this.
@c.d.90355 жыл бұрын
They do a great job of clearing the roads in Montreal. Here (Madison, Wisconsin), they only clear off the top of the snow, so the rest of it gets tamped down and turns into ice. That ice can be really persistent anywhere where there's low car travel, like side streets and bike lanes. The dedicated bike paths do get pretty well cleared off and sanded, but at every street crossing there will be a little mountain of snow and ice and whatever. Fat knobby tires do a better job getting across the messy places.

Do not forget the studded tires. They are less expensive than one trip to the emergency room and mine last 2,200 miles riding on mostly bare concrete roads in below freezing conditions.
@aestheticcruise88077 жыл бұрын
Studded tires make a huge difference. Just keep in mind it's best to avoid exposed pavement the best you can but the studs are made of reinforced carbide steel if memory serves me right. I've ridden bikes in winter for the last 4-5 years and now here in 2018 on my first ever fat bike no studs. I still say studs can be very vital....

I have seen most of the videos about winter biking. Even though I will consider to do it only on 'recreational' not commuting, the cost to do it is higher, but the worst is not that, but the amount of risk: Deicer (bleach-salt) slippery, you can't see the ground, sun working against drivers, flat tires extra hard time to fix, harsh conditions on you and your bike, slippery vehicles, etc etc... So as long as you are not in a rush to get somewhere but just for having fun, then do it. Otherwise, step back.

You don't need fat tires..
@aestheticcruise88076 жыл бұрын
superhotbm True, For those who can't afford or choose not to ride a fat tire bike in the winter. Example being rims designed to take 26x2.10 tires. Just put on studded tires, deeper tread or more width and lower your tire pressure. I used to ride a mountain bike with 26 inch tires 2 x30 inches wide but since I got my fat bike, I dont bog down and sink as much but even with good treaded fat tires, my bike won't handle snow any deeper if the snow covers the rim completely.

My fat tire bicycle is 700 x 35! :) ...but i commute in sunny So Cal. I have been curious about snow riding though. Is it as scary as it looks? (at least the first few times as I'm sure you get use to it)
@roshi985 жыл бұрын
@@ShermanSitter To be honest, it's only scary because of cars. I've got Schwalbe Winter Marathon 700 x 35 on my bike (live in Adirondack Mountain area) and the grip I get on icy or packed snow roads is great for my daily commute. Yeah, you're not going to bomb down hills or set any PBRs but it is fun to ride in those conditions and most of the time very peaceful, especially at night on the side roads.
