nice one buddy , good gear choices

thanks man! I am lucky to have a bunch of gear to choose from... but also makes me have to make the decisions on what to bring along every trip 😅

Nothing beats a good steak 🥩. I admire how ultra light your gear always is. I just got back from a trip last weekend and it was damn coldddd. 🥶 a hot tent definitely helped me out 😭
@DerekSOutdoors10 күн бұрын
yeah buddy!! there's just something about steaks on a campfire that make them especially tasty. I just try to pack with the necessities, always go with a sleeping bag or sleep system that is about 10°C warmer than the low temp and then the rest of the gear can be pretty minimal. Because if anything happens, know i have the safety of that sleeping bag! I saw you posted a video earlier today, interested to see what your hot tent looks like. I will be checking it out tonight when I get home :)

need to get one of those hot tents like the other people camping in the winter, then a stove and a sled to pull it all... maybe I can borrow a dog to pull the sled 😂

It was great meeting you and everyone else at the show! and thanks for watching, gotta love smashing a brewski when packing. Too bad i didn't have one of those Jim Baird beers handy 😅

Great to see that you were able to make it out for a winter camp. Looked like a great overnight with some tasty eats. I will have to consider adding frozen dumplings to my winter camping menu. Nice work on filming in those frigid temps! I hope you didn’t lose any digits in the process. Cheers!

Haha thanks for watching... I brought enough clothes and those big leather mittens and sorel boots are quite warm no frostbite. Winter is great for camp cooking because you can bring any food you like and it won't spoil. I am thinking about what to bring out next time 🤔 hmmmm, any good ideas?

Been out a couple times already 1 time hot tent car camp with a buddy that’s never winter camped before and had all the luxurious and once myself for something a little more challenging and gratifying. Chopsticks as a fork lol I do the same thing at home. My old man eats ice cream with chop sticks😂

Nice! I am really hoping to get out a few more times in the next couple weeks while we still got the snow. I haven't invested in a hot tent yet, mainly because I dont want to lug it around with a sled 😅 and then figure out how to dry it out after I get home for storage. chop sticks are a great invention, works as a fork, spatula, tongs... a tent peg in a pinch! 😂

Not this winter, too busy unfortunately. Went out last Feb at -38...which is tough even with the wood stove. Going in March to Algonquin. How do those UL packs fare in that temp?
@DerekSOutdoors10 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's been busy up until this past week for me as well, but hopefully I can get out more in Feb. -38 sounds brutal, the coldest i've been out is around the -30 and for that i need the winter bag + a quilt over it. A hot tent would be ideal for that, but I just haven't invested in one because I dont want to lug it around in a sled. As for the UL pack, it works fine, no issues with the materials, just have to be meticulous about how you pack things inside so: 1) it doesn't poke at your back and 2) make sure the weight distribution is good with heavy stuff in the middle near your back. if the heavy stuff is too high or low in the bag it will either feel tippy and top heavy, or you feel A LOT of weight on your legs.

Nice to see your video this morning, Derek. We were out the same week, not because we wanted to test ourselves, those were the days of work. It was a good trip though. Your gear organization makes me jealous 😂. Loved the food and the video 😍🔥.

It was definitely a cold week, glad to hear you made it out for some winter camping and had a good time. Curious what you cooked when you were out there, your meals are always amazing. As for the gear closet, have to keep things in their place or I end up losing or forgetting to bring things for the next trip 😅

@DerekSOutdoors we went with steak and potatoes this time, nothing fancy. We didn't want to plan something elaborate with the weather challenges.
