Info is 100% correct, no matter which alcohol stove you use. You mentioned plastic bottles for carrying extra naphtha fuel. Any info on what type of bottles they are? I assume it's "fuel proof" plastic, not a water bottle. Winter here is often -40 so I use, exclusively, the MSR universal stove, which is similar to yours. Never had a problem that couldn't be fixed out in the field. Also, the "spirit stoves" need so much fuel to boil an equivalent amount of water that any weight advantage with the simple alcohol stove is nullified very quickly.

I have just used a 4oz soda bottle, like the ones airlines provide. I've never had degradation, even after years.

great reply. most of these people have never lived, worked visited places that get to -40 F\C so they have no idea what happens to fuel.

-40º C/F is a tough one for sure.

White Gas Stoves are designed for Winter use. I have the Optimus 8R 'Hunter' which performs well all year round .. even into well below freezing conditions. In all fairness, those little Soda Can Burners (I have a heap of .. and love them) are not really suitable for hard core winter conditions. Yes, they 'can' be made to work, but then, only to a point. A complete Trangia Cook System would have made for a more fair comparison. And yes, White Gas Stoves do not go down well inside a tiny enclosed tent 😏. I have even modified my Alcohol Burners to reduce the risk of burning fuel spillage in the event of an inadvertent knockover. Filled the fuel compartments with Ceramic / Glass Wool and / or Carbon Cloth. No noticeable (nothing to lose sleep over) reduction in efficiency and, in below-freezing temperatures, MUCH easier to light up .. even the Trangia 😊.

I vastly prefer alcohol for melting snow in the winter, BUT this assumes I have the right stove setup. By "the right stove setup" I mean two things: a "caldera" style cone-shaped windscreen/pot holder, and a sealed-cap alcohol burner (like the Trangia). The cone-style windscreen/holder is extremely efficient - I can turn snow into a liter of hot water with just 1 oz of alcohol because it completely wraps around the sides of the pot, focusing the heat where it's needed. A sealed-cap burner is necessary in order to warm up the alcohol. I have never had a problem lighting alcohol, even at -15F, because it only needs to get up to about 20F before it can light (I prefer a using ferro rod), and I just fill the Trangia or Kojin and put that inside a pocket for a few minutes. Alcohol stoves have no moving parts, no nasty, toxic, explosive, expensive stinky gasoline, no pumps, no special pressurized (and heavy) canisters that can give you frostbite, no soot to clean, no giant fireballs, no jet engine roar, and no disposable steel containers. They don't tip over or spill, and even if they could, it's not a big deal. "White gas" (gasoline) has a higher energy density than ethanol, but try adding up the weight of that setup including canisters and comparing it to a Ti-Tri / Kojin stove with alcohol. Gasoline burners melt snow faster than alcohol, but a) you have to watch the gasoline burner like a hawk if you don't want your tent to burn down, and b) much heat is lost to the surrounding air. Oh, and a Ti-Tri doubles as a twig burning stove, so you have a backup in case you run out of fuel if there are trees around. You can use an alcohol stove inside your tent, though boiling water will add a lot of condensation. I use pure ethanol (sold as "smart" or "regal" fuel) rather than denatured, but keep in mind that anything you burn releases CO, even if you can't see or smell anything. If I could only use an alcohol burner with no cap like Aaron shows, or if I couldn't use a cone-style pot holder/windscreen, then I too would prefer a whisperlight for melting snow in subzero weather.

I have had my two Trangia stoves for about 14yrs, and the denatured alcohol that is primarily ethanol does create soot, far more than my MSR Dragonfly stoves. The brand of denatured alcohol Al showed in the video has more methanol blended in it than other brands and it creates zero soot in my Trangias. White gas or even kerosene leave zero soot on my Dragonfly stoves if I preheat with them with that denatured alcohol as it is only the preheating process with white gas or kero that creates soot. Once my Dragonflys are running up to temp they create zero soot with white gas or kero. I like both Trangias and Dragonflys for their ability to simmer for cooking real food as well as their ability to boil

I'm sorry but that is not a fair comparison in the slightest. Comparing a white gas and trangia stove would be much fairer.

True - I've had questions asking which is better for this use case.
