The closer they are to your rod, the faster the liner. Slow liners tend to be near the bait (not allowing for "nuisance fish")

What's the idea of lifting the rod up almost past 12 o'clock once you've cast out? You both do it.

I think you might be referring to the technique whereby braking the cast mid flight ensures the bait stays ahead of the bomb to prevent tangles.

When clipped up it's about cushioning and straightening the rig to prevent cracking off the cast/rig. Hope that helps.
