Today is my 40th birthday and I asked myself who would I want to listen to in my ear while I’m in the garden? Of course I wanted to hear from my “uncle” and soak in the positivity of Roy! I couldn’t have picked a better talk to inspire me today. Thank you!

Invaluable Roy- and as a former clarinet player(loved that analogy😂)and now “recovering gardener”, I will be looking at my garden plans with new eyes! Nice to meet you in Delavan at our favorite coffee haunt - Boxed!

Love your work Roy. I’ve planted over 200 plants in the last year using your “simple” principles. Definitely not perfect, but it’s a start and we’ll adjust accordingly. One thing I would also love a video on is how you design the shape of your garden beds. I usually see very flowy, organic shapes (like you show at 14:33), but I’ve been struggling to design something like that myself where it doesn’t look too artificial. So, keen to see how you do that!

The first question is size. What are you able to care for? After you determine the total sq ft that you can take care of, you can start with a garden hose or spray paint and lay out a basic shape and make adjustments before making anything permanent.

Roy, thank you for your videos: I've learned allot. How do you maintain the edge of the bed where it meets the turf?

We edge twice a year with a straight edge shovel and give a 6 inch buffer area btwn the turf and plants.

Another thing to think about is whether a perennial has a basal foliage rosette and, if not, how quickly does the foliage appear in spring. Something like Penstemon 'Husker Red' has a nice clump of burgundy basal foliage that's already there in the spring garden. Something like sedum or achillea has foliage that grows rapidly in spring and becomes an important part of the spring garden even though they don't flower till later. Some perennials start out very slow, so they won't look like anything in spring. Same with many of the warm season grasses - be aware that they will be much less prominent in spring, whereas they can be a dominant part of the look in fall. There are a couple of plants with basal rosettes of gigantic leaves in spring that don't flower until late season that I love in the spring garden - my faves are Rudbeckia maxima and Aster 'Jindai'. And remember you can always edit the garden if there's too much or too little of something.

Thanks Roy! Great video as usual. Glad to have you back! One question. What characteristic(s) do you look at to decide whether a plant should be on 15” or 18” centers? Is it just eventual spread?
