Can you drive a Nissan Leaf in a snow storm? Of course, you can. The car is actually an good winter car when it comes to drive in snow. And the range is not so much effected as you can expect. But you must be careful with the torque of the car, so you do not get stuck.

I have a 2013 Leaf and live in a cold area. One thing I've found is that putting it in the "B" Drive Eco setting helps when the conditions are slippery. The "B" Drive slows the car without touching the brakes. The Eco mode makes it harder to spin the wheels when starting from a dead stop on the icy pavement. Many times it handles better than my Jeep Liberty.

Well driving in a winter might not be a problem. However keeping an electric car out in freezing temperatures outside over night or during the day can reduce your range up to 40% from what I heard. Plus the heating, that adds up to about 50%. And that is the reason I decided against buying an electric car. I think nowadays it's only for people who own a garage. I'll wait another 5 years when the technology of the battery improves. So here's an interesting idea for you to make another video. Leave the Leaf outside over night, then drive it to work (or pretend) and leave it outside for another 8 hours in freezing temperatures and I'm really really curious how's that gonna play out as far as range goes.

you can try to used plug in hybrid, you can start the car to charge the battery and warm your car at the same time. Save money.
@Prodigious1One
@Prodigious1One Жыл бұрын
Um... I don't know if 40% of lost range is correct. It is probably less than that. Also if the car is plugged in over night, then the car may end up recharging whatever energy is lost due to the cold if it is not restricted to timed charging while plugged in.

The only problem in this car is range anxiety. I have had 24kWh Leaf 2013 and in winter range was 130 km (later with LeafBox extender - 145-150 km). In sommer it was about 160. Far to short. Now I use 30 kWh 2016 and it is far better. So my suggestion is to avoid 24 kWh version.

Yes, the heat pump in the Leaf from 2015 that I had was relay efficient. Now I am back using standard heating elements in My Tesla model 3, but since the battery is so huge comparing to the leaf it is not a big issue unless you need to go very far in cold weather. I loved the leaf but unfortunately Nissan did not take care of it EV customers very well, and I gave up the brand. There is an automatic heating system inside the Nissan battery pack, that starts at -17C and stops at -14 C , because at -17 C the battery pack will freeze, handy if you don't have a garage,... but the heating ' will not start if the battery pack has not enough power about 14%. Bottom line can leave the car to charge at the home/station plug at night.

-18C windshield washer fluid? That would not last here, the system would be frozen solid. In my 2013 Leaf I get -45C fluid from Costco and even that sometimes isn't enough! You can tell when it will not pump washer fluid. An ICE has an advantage as the engine warmth will help keep the fluid liquid for use. We are hoping for global warming here as the winters are so bitterly cold and snowy and dark (well global warming won't change that of course!). Well the speed limit is a maximum limit, not a minimum limit. When you need to extend your range (say, to get home) when there are no chargers (or petrol/diesel stations) on the way, it makes sense to reduce your speed. EV drivers are more likely to be struggling to find a charger than petrol/diesel drivers to find a filling station, that is until there are more chargers than filling stations! Of course there are other road users who need to drive slowly (buses, tractors, cyclists, horses, heavy haulage etc.). We all need some patience and to drive responsibly and considerately, maybe pull over into a lay-by if we are causing a tail-back of traffic. But we don't need to be pressured into driving fast by the persistently late and the terminally speedy!
@RubenKelevra
@RubenKelevra 7 жыл бұрын
In Germany it's illegal to drive slow without a reason. So if the road is clear and visibility is good you have to drive fast.
@andrewmcgowan2798
@andrewmcgowan2798 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting - "you have to drive fast" does that mean in Germany you must drive precisely at the speed limit in good conditions? Or is there some leeway? What about road users who can not drive fast enough (buses, tractors, cyclists, horses, heavy haulage etc.)? "Without a reason" - would an acceptable reason include improving your fuel economy, minimising damage to the environment or making it to the next charger/filling station?

But the point is that it did not suck. Yes, it is less range, but the not so much as people like to think. But the LEAF, 24 kWh battery was making the range limited on other had today most of electric cars has lager battery’s and longer range. Regarding my so called story telling voice, this is how I do it, some purple love it, some don´t care and some like you hate it. We all have different preferences, isn’t that great! @myelectricearth896
@myelectricearth896 2 жыл бұрын
No I am not mention this because it is simply not true. In the earlier version of the LEAF that statement could be valid since this had an electric heat element resistance to generate heat, but with this version that I use in this episode it is replaced with an match more efficient electric heat pump that is not impacting the range so much. Even Tesla has the heat pump in all there models now a days. But in Tesla:s case the battery is any way so large so even a cold day you have a really long range comparing to the Nissan Leaf’s small battery. In the combustion engine you are constantly getting cheated by heating the engine to extreme temperatures, and only getting use of it really cold days. I explained this in one of my latest episodes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKnVlKloq7x7qdU

In Sweden, we are used to snow and winter, and there are not many 4 wheels’ cars out the on the roads. It is slippery, and there are accidents but the road is cleaned and deiced with different methods so a front wheel car with winter tire is mostly enough. Although not showed in this move since it takes some time before the come and shuffle the rods in the aria whew I shout the move.

I had no problems with my Leaf in the snow this winter and have fond memories of driving my '90 Civic SI to the ski hill.

Hey we had some serious snow fall (about 30 cms) and I got by just as well as any 4x4 that was on the road.

I have lived in "snow" countries all my life and I have had, 4x4, FWD and RWD cars. 4x4 is nice in the winter but absolutely not necessary. If you know what you are doing and use some common sense you don't need 4x4.

It's much more important to have proper winter tires than 4wd.

Can you drive them at 40C plus in summer and not affect battery life? Reverse camera only for cunts who cannot drive and incompetent. How many Km's when travelling at 120kph or kwh /100km?
