Hello from Eastern Idaho. Thanks for video! Very informative and will save me ALOT of unnecessary time & effort trying to protect my lodge pole pines.

I've had this problem too in zone 6A with mostly the Japanese pines and it always happened during the first or second freeze of the season. On the other hand this winter the 3 day Xmas storm caused more winter burn than ever before and was from 72 hours of high winds, single digit Fahrenheit temps, and no snow. Many factors cause this what I call freezer burn and it sucks. Great video I think it's so cool when the sap freezes in an evergreen and it moves so rigidly as I seen on a couple of your evergreens.

Holy Buckets! I swear I'm the only one I know who uses that phrase. Thanks for the good info! Hi from South Dakota. 😊

Thanks for your honesty! Sometimes I think I’m the only one with so many “didn’t make it”. I’m wondering if trees initial growing environments plays a part as well- under shelter, growing together, etc

What a difference here in eastern Pennsylvania. While we only average 3 feet of snow a winter, we’ve only had 3 inches this winter! Hopefully you thaw out within a month so you can enjoy your beautiful yard. Thanks for the information on evergreen burn.

Yeah I'm in far southwestern Virginia and we average 20 inches annually got 2 dustings of snow had the mildest winter ever....but the 3 days at Xmas destroyed my yard worse than ever with the freezer burn. You win some you lose some it's all part of it

Omg sorry you lost so many trees! I took today 2 green giant arbs out. 3 Smaragd arborvitae look just like the browning your trees show. I thought it was my mistake by possibly not watering them enough. I have never seen this before. I kind of feel better knowing that besides possibly using burlap I couldn’t have done anything

Hi Kevin, just wondering if you had any guesses as to why you didn't have success with your Picea engelmannii 'Bush's Lace'. Everything I've read says it's hardy to zone 3. Thoughts? Thanks.

After reading your comment and perusing the web, I was surprised that many websites listed the spruce as Zone 3, as you said. When I was more involved in purchasing nursery stock for a previous job, even one of my most trusted reps questioned my decision to plant the Bush’s Lace, commenting it was likely a Zone 5 plant. All that being said, I suspect that it prefers a lower pH, acidic soil. I have neutral + levels. I’ve started to look more closely at soil requirements before planting rather than just temperature now, but that information is more challenging to find…

I have lost a lot of ever greens to winter burn myself. My 'skylands' spruce looks toast as do some of my 'gold drifts' and I have yet to see how my 'limeys' made out as they are under snow still. What was the coldest temperature you had this winter?

We hit about -25F. If you like the yellows, you ever try growing Taylor’s Sunburst Lodgepole Pine? Only yellow in the spring but what a great tough tree.
