Sandy beta, those yellow flowers that you showed are not perennials. They are called gladiolus and you have to dig up the the bulb from the ground and store them in a paper bag somewhere in the basement where it is cold but frost free temperature like the canteena or coldroom as some like to call it and out again after danger of frost is gone. And Al's if you do take them out of the ground you will the find under the old bulb a new one has grown and that's the one to keep for next year, break the old one and discard as it's useless. I absolutely love to watch you both, and being a fellow gardener makes me happy to watch excited about gardening in general about plants, which I am a fanatic.

I live in BC too mint need some prunning, but most of the time it will came back in Spring, yiu can also pick n dry the leaves in leave in a tight jar to use in fall and winter.
