After a long hiatus I'm glad to find a guide which is not either DST-only or at least 8 years old. ;) I particularly watched out for a detailed thermal stone usage because as you said, the wiki for it is lousy. And the DST mechanics seems quite different. There you can clearly overheat your body with only one stone in the normal (!) inventory.

OH HEY - I just had an idea about thermal stones! If I've understood everything you said correctly, then they should be really useful to prevent cooling due to wetness, in spring but especially in Shipwrecked. Because you're not going to be wearing insulation (maybe a raincoat) and the ambient temperature is not actually that low, it's the wetness factor that chills you, so the stone itself should stay warm for longer. Any thoughts on that? I admit that freezing isn't the highest risk of wandering around soaked to the skin, but it can happen, and lighting fires esp. in SW weather can be really difficult. Ideally of course you just shouldn't be getting that wet but you know what this game is like!
@salendrak3 жыл бұрын
Yup - wetness basically causes your perceived temperature to be lower than the actual ambient temperature, but a thermal stone does work to raise your temperature in those situations. Good catch!

So, thermal stones in DST do work a little bit differently than they do in single player....but I haven't tested it out or researched it. So not sure!! I think they are about as good as 120 insulation though, but they lose durability when they pass certain thresholds of temperature. Not sure if the 2 stones trick works, but that would be easy to test! Just heat two up, put them in a backpack, and keep standing next to a blazing fire. If you start to overheat - it works!!

I just use thermal stones the whole way through to be honest. Just the fact that, if at any point you have to equip armor or a light, then all the time spent wearing anything else was wasted as your character rapidly cools down to the thermal stone's level anyway. The time you get from that is shorter, at least shorter than if you used a thermal stone to warm up and then equipped gear. But the upside to that is you don't have to actually warm up by the fire, just leave a thermal stone there and come back for it, and that'll warm you. I tend to make two and "hot-swap" when I get back and before I leave for somewhere.

I’m stuck with DS Pocket Edition so it’s even harder for a newbie since you can’t use the quality of life mods which really do make a massive difference from what I’ve seen. So I just wanted to say I love survival games & I’ve played quite a few of them over the years. Some were decent when it came to difficulty. Others were so cruel to beginners it hurt the fun. Others were rough but fair. However for whatever reason DS was one of the very few that I tried to play a few different times and I just couldn’t understand it. I mean I got the basics but there was just so much you had to do and their was little room for error that I just never was able to get into the mid game to really enjoy it. @salendrak Жыл бұрын
If you're playing in Reign of Giants, you can rarely get gears from tumbleweeds. Otherwise digging up graves is your next best bet, but it's only like a 3% chance to get gears. Really though you should just go take out some clockworks. If you're not good at fighting them yourself, hire some pigs to help you out! As for deerclops, the wiki says it can despawn if it's been able to destroy enough structures without getting attacked. Or something like that. Otherwise it sticks around until the seasons change or something.

Lots of reading on the wiki and reddit, and lots personal testing in a world set to endless winter! But I rarely take anything the wiki says at face value (it's known to have lots of errors) so specific stuff like this I like to test out to make sure that, as much as possible, whatever I say is pretty accurate.
@Nilon2414 жыл бұрын
@@salendrak do you know if the same rules about thermal stones not working with high insulation during summer? Like would it be harmless to carry around that max heat stone during summer?
@salendrak4 жыл бұрын
@@Nilon241 I haven't researched warming rate / thermal stones in summer yet, but I don't think they work exactly the same (or rather, opposite) to how they do in Winter. That said, I did just test it a little bit, and here's what I found: A cold thermal stone plus max insulation (eyebrella and floral shirt in this case) causes you to warm up a little bit slower than just the insulation. In contrast, if you pick up a heated thermal stone, you'll warm up just as fast as if you weren't holding a thermal stone at all. So my preliminary conclusion is that a thermals stone in winter will only help you - it won't cause you to warm up any faster. I haven't tested it at all with other levels of insulation though. But yes - it would seem that carrying a heater thermals stone won't hurt you in the summer.
@Neewom Жыл бұрын
I'm confused, am I misunderstanding? Rule 1 "In winter a cold thermal stone will NOT make you colder faster" Rule 2 " At 120 insul a thermal stone will NOT affect the rate at which you get colder" Aren't both rules stating the exact same information? Either way once again a great video and I appreciate your effort/content!
@salendrak Жыл бұрын
Not quite the same. The idea of Rule 1 is that if you are warm, you can pick up a super freezing cold thermal stone, and it won't cause you to cool down. Intuitively it would seem like picking up a cold stone would be bad, but it isn't. The idea behind Rule 2 though is that if you have less than 120 insulation, then your character's rate of temperature change with a thermal stone will be based on the thermal stones internal rate of temperature change, which isn't affected by your insulation. But if you have at least 120 insulation, then your rate of temperature change will be slower than the thermal stones, so even though it will cool down faster than you, your rate of change won't be affected by the thermal stone. So yeah - the 2 rules are sort of saying the same thing, but there are some slight nuances. ps - I have no idea if the QoL update from earlier this year changed any of that!

Speaking as a new person to the game, by far the most difficult part of this has been keeping a steady supply of grass during the winter, especially if I haven't been able to scout out any beefalo during the autumn. Any advice for keeping up with the insanely high demand for grass (and to a lesser extent, twigs) during the winter, or does it just come down to toughing it out and hoping for the best?
@salendrak2 жыл бұрын
Are you able to get the whole outline of the world mapped out by about day 10 or so? If you do that, you should know the location of a savannah and a few grasslands that should have plenty of grass, and the grasslands and forests usually have plenty of twigs. As you get more experienced in the game you'll start to realize that most of the time problems arise when you didn't do things efficiently in the prior 10 days or so. Put differently, if you're running out of grass and twigs in Winter, chances are you didn't stockpile enough in fall. Regardless, if you do run low during winter, usually the best bet is to take a day or two and go out to where you can get more to last the rest of the season. Keep at it and with time and experience, you'll get more efficient at stuff like that!

Mmmmmm maybe. For winter clothing it's a pretty short list for the good stuff: silk from spiders, wool from beefalo, a beefalo horn, and a winter koalefant trunk and you're done for winter! For the other seasons I'll at the very least mention where / how to get the good stuff. And there's always the wiki for reference too!
@karinab43944 жыл бұрын
@@salendrak you’re right, thanks! It’s just that there are some items that have some pretty exotic things that are not easily found but I’ll do the wiki research when needed 🤓

Wow, I completely misunderstood the mechanics of thermal stones. I thought they prevented your character from dropping temperature but they're just another form of insolation. Edit: Ooohh now I only partially misunderstood the thermal stone.
@salendrak4 жыл бұрын
Technically, they are an independent heat source with their own insulation - so it's temperature drops independently of yours, but keeps you at least as warm as it is. But yeah, they are totally confusing in how they work. Before making this video I certainly had a few misconceptions about them!
@ghostderazgriz3 жыл бұрын
@@salendrak That means for Console players without mods, thermal stones are the best and only way to get an idea of what temperature their characters are based on the current temperature of the stone.
@胡高平4 жыл бұрын
The trick of the 2 thermal stones is not a bug. When you stand near a fire pit, you heat yourself with a thermal stone, you heat yourself faster because the stone warms faster than you and then, by having the thermal stone in your pocket, you will heat faster. The 2 thermal stones in backpack trick is like a little paradox. When you heat, the thermal stone will make you warm faster and it will warm the other stone, which will heat the first stone, heating the second ect...and every time you will be also heated.

Thanks for the high praise, but I think I'll have to pass for now. My overall available time to work on making videos and even play computer games in general is pretty limited, and I think for now I should probably focus on getting a good critical mass of core content before branching off into too many directions. Keeping up on even two games is proving to be quite the challenge already! But I'll keep an eye on your channel, and down the road if it looks like we would be a good fit for a collaboration I'll definitely keep the idea in mind!
