On a snowy winter morning, Kim and Gretchen Granbery of Leetes Island Oysters visit their oyster beds in the Thimble Islands for the final harvest of the year. Gretchen likes to joke “This is where we wash their face and brush their teeth,” while spraying, scraping and sorting oysters. Kim works beside her pulling aboard oyster-filled cages. This year, they closed their growing season on a snowy late December morning before taking time in the winter to “exhale” before work begins again in the spring.
