Such interesting problems to consider when sailing in the Arctic. Boat repairs in freezing temperatures, frozen dock line, boat entombed in snow and ice, and a dingy that cannot be bailed when it is full of frozen water! Drone footage and camera footage was amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, angle grinder with strip disc (they are like a heavy duty scotchbrite) are amazing at removing paint and leaving the substrate unaffected, can even be used on wood with little impact on the wood when removing paint. Note they come in different grades. They don't tend to leave scratch marks like sandpaper does. Best of all they last ages.

Another awesome video, thank you. Loved it. Wow, you were so lucky that Sylvia had so little damage from the storm, the rescuers did well. While watching I kept thinking ... I'm sure the yacht designers didn't design your yacht with expectations of the weather (snow) you take Sylvia out in, nor for the weight of all that snow and ice on deck. 🥶😊 Amazing drone footage again. Just beautiful. Fab editing. Hi from Perth in Oz, winter here, sunny 20C days. No snow 🥴😕. Fair winds, Elaine

For the frozen mainsail track, perhaps you could run a small diameter tube up the mast with the open end in the track into which you could pump some de-icing fluid. The fluid would run down and clear the ice or snow. Warm windshield washer fluid would probably work. Never sailed in the arctic but used to fly up in Northern Canada and one has to get creative sometimes. Good luck and thank you for the great videos.

Seems you should either stay with your boat in the winter or hire someone to maintain the boat while you’re not there. Boat is being damaged by neglect. The cold freezes electric systems, systems carrying liquids, and etc if not maintained. Of course if you have money to repair/replace all the freeze damage then ignore this. Stay safe.

I haven't watched the entire video yet but got to the part where you talk about the damage to the hull. Since that chain rubbed thru the bottom paint and the gelcoat, down to the fiberglass, did you apply two coats of 'barrier coat' on the bottom? That's what makes the fiberglass waterproof, is the barrier coat. I see from the video that while grinding, you ran into a white area below the bottom paint, which I think is the barrier coat. You might check into this to see if your boat has a couple of layers of barrier coat between the gelcoat and the bottom paint. If so, next time you haul out, I'd remove the bottom paint you just applied and follow the manufacturers recommendations regarding barrier coating the bottom. Otherwise, glad things weren't more serious!

As always, stunning work, thank you for the videos! I'm currently working on getting my Bruce Roberts 37C Spray into working condition so I can sail across the Atlantic from NA, and I will be landing in Norway after Iceland-Faroe Islands-Shetland. To avoid icing in your headsail track, would it not make sense to have a mast cover that you could pull up using the mainsail halyard? Just food for thought. Best wishes
@AlluringArctic
@AlluringArctic 4 жыл бұрын
Yep something like that... and also, you could make a special tool to slide up the mainsail track (with a halyard), wouldn't be too complicated. (could also just climb the mast)! So far have been lazy to accomplish any of these ! :D
