My Great-grandmother made dye from a big walnut tree in her yard. I saw her throw in a handful of salt towards the end of the process many times. It always confused me then, but many years later I learned it was to help set the color in the fabric. In lean years they would remove the husk from the walnut and just use those to make dye. Then again I saw her use clay, leaves from certain trees, and berries to make dye as well. I never saw her cook in the fireplace though. She had a wood burning stove. It is in my garage right now waiting on me to get it in my shop.

What a beautiful, gentle video 😊 I am 55 and in the UK, and I remember sitting at my grandmother's hearth which was set up very similarly, back when I was just a chap. She almost always had something simmering on the fire, or on the stove in the kitchen. I doubt today's folks would even believe this but we used to gather young dandelion leaves as a salad, wild garlic, and her apple and blackberry pies were out of this world. Happy days - thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories 😊

I thought l'd put my two cents in! When watching a prominent seamstress on KZbin she had said how difficult it was to sew on black material because you can't hardly see the thread. Perhaps making your garment first then dying it black just might be the thing to do. 😊

I don't know if you do any trapping there or not. We used to mash the walnut hulls and put them in a bucket of water. We would let our traps soak in it for a couple of days. It turned them black and kept them from rusting. Also, you could pour a little of it on the ground around your trap set and it would get rid of the man scent. I have an aunt that uses the walnuts to make a pie similar to pecan pies. I am not sure if she does anything different other than using a different nut, but they are delicious. They are one of my favorite desserts.

I've done a lot of natural dyeing, and while many people think you have to use the hulls of the walnuts, that's not the case. I sometimes have needed to remove a walnut sapling that is too young to produce nuts, but the inner bark, twigs, and leaves can all be used for dye, giving shades of dark brown from the bark to golden brown from the twigs and leaves. I strip the bark when it can be removed easily and it can be dried and put aside in the woodshed until ready to use. Leaves give more color when allowed to wilt in the sun while still on the branches. Fresh and green doesn't do much.

I lost my footing and fell off a cliff. I chipped my left leg in two places, broke my right foot, and fractured my skull. Even got scalped a wee bit (missing about 10 sq cm's or so). I went through your playlist and re watched all your videos, and they've kept me entertained! I liked to dabble in living history as well, with my persona being that of an 1820's fur trapper (i.e. Ashley's 100). 70 years ago I was 12. I used to dye my spring traps in that hot walnut husk solution just before trapping season. Boiled them for some period of time, can’t remember exactly how long. Can’t remember the theory behind it other than to neutralize any odors of manufacture and humans. I had to be careful handling them after that to keep them sterilized This process worked quite well as I was successful trapping! JIM ❤

Wonderful! I can almost taste that soup! I've has some success dyeing using onion skins, but the color is a light brown - nothing like the walnut you use here. Thank you!

Very nice ☺️ I crochet a bit and am learning to knit. The soup looked so good, I love it when it tastes like another bowl, lol! Potato soup has been on my mind the last few days as well. Thanks for sharing the walnut dying, the natural dye process is something I'd like to learn about. 🤗

Walnut dye keeps very well if you add rubbing alcohol to it. It's my understanding that the alcohol kills off bacteria. I've also found that no matter how bad your dye looks, it generally works.
