In the Louisville/Southern Indiana area where I lived, the winds were so fierce that the ice sickles formed on our home’s gutters tilted at exactly the same angle, like they were lining up in formation.

I can't believe I came across this, I lived in the north east during this storm and remember it well even though I was a kid. The snow drifts were higher than our house and all our water pipes froze and we had no running water for weeks.

Mauricio Espinosa, you bet!! We had a 2 story colonial with a front porch overhanging the roof. When we opened the front door, the front porch looked like an ice cave! We went upstairs and out a bedroom window onto the porch roof to sled down the snow drift into the front yard!!! We built snow forts that looked like the defense of Planet Hoth! Good times.

Blizzards in 1979 in America. Parts of Europe were hit by extreme blizzards too during that winter. Especially in West Germany, East Germany (DDR) Denmark, the Netherlands and parts of Great Brittain were the blizzards during late december 1978 and the Valentine blizzard of 1979 extreme and unforgettable.

I lived in Union County, Illinois in 1979, was 14 years old. We had no idea there was going to be snow let alone a blizzard when we went to bed on Saturday, Jan 13th but woke up to inches of snow already on Sunday the 14th. We ended up with 3 ft of snow. No school for more than a week. My mother always shopped on Friday night or Saturday morning so we had food the first 5 days. I remember my mom didn't go to work, she worked at IGA Foodliner. I do know she walked to IGA once they got a truck in and bought some food. We had a blast building igloos, caves and tunnels. I don't remember anything stressful for our family. My mom always had a way of feeding us. My dad walked to work to make sure the factory he worked at was ok. They didn't open but he was responsible for maintenance of the building etc. All our friends enjoyed the accumulation of snow as should a 14 year old! However people all over our state and the Midwest had different sad experiences and of course the storm pushed on and the east got hit too!

My mother was in high school at the time, and lived in Northern Ohio in 1977-78. Those winters were absolutely horrendous. My mother remembers being snowed in and at that time it was more country than suburban so they were snowed in for the entire week. To this day though mom always complains that we don't get winter in Cleveland anymore because nothing like that happens anymore.

I was a Missouri State Highway worker in 1978-1979. We worked more than 12 hours a day for over a month beginning on December 31st 1978. I was stuck more than once even though we had chains and lots of weight. Many places in the Kansas City area where we worked could only be cleared with loaders because of the drifting. We had no more snow blower trucks in the state at that time so some roads that were severely drifted took days and weeks to clear. I hope I never go through that much snow again.

I was a student going to technical school in Cranston Rhode Island and lived in Providence at the time. The storm wasn't supposed to be that bad and our teachers had said that if anybody left early they would be marked as absent for the day. My grades weren't too good there, but I took a chance and left early. The bus from Cranston to downtown Providence should have taken approximately 35 minutes, instead it took about 50, but the real storm hit just about the time we made downtown. I lived on Gano Street and had what was normally a 5 minute bus ride up the hill which ended up taking 45 minutes. I understand that I was very lucky to make that bus because they stopped running after that, and lots of people had to sleep in the lobby of the bank and inside stores. I hadn't made any provisions for that kind of weather, and had a checking account but no cash. Luckily for me the only store within walking distance that would accept my check had also been caught open. Their doors failed and so they had no choice but to literally stay open and do business. The snow was so hard that I was able to walk on top of it to the store often level with the roofs of vehicles that had been parked on the street. After several days of isolation so, my boyfriend, who worked for the state of Massachusetts was able to come down and rescue me. The difference in the highways between Rhode Island and Massachusetts was amazing. As soon as we cross the state border we had a relatively easy time of it, whereas Rhode Island was literally shut down and no traffic was moving.

I joined the RAF in 1979 and it was (as far as memory serves) one of the mildest winters we ever had in the United Kingdom, glad I didn’t have to do my basic training in even 50% of the conditions that the USA suffered/suffers. In 🇬🇧 we only need 1/2 inches of snow and the whole country shuts down, good job we don’t have such blizzard conditions very often. I really feel sorry for the gentleman who was told by his insurance company that he was “covered for nothing”, it’s seems nothing has changed, insurance companies are quite happy to take your money, tell you how good your policy is, and that you have nothing to worry about, and then, wham, you put a claim in and you find out your policy wasn’t worth the paper it was written on,and when you complain all you get is “you should have read the small print”, if we had good enough eyesight and a week to read it then ok, but who does have the time or inclination, we trust the broker or salesperson to be honest and steer us in the right direction, will we ever learn, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT, and the insurance companies will keep on conning us with their patter and LIES. Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative film 🎥😔👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

It was as if Indianapolis Indiana was picked up and deposited in Siberia. I have never, ever been so scared in all my life. It snowed several feet then the horrible, crushing cold set it and wind. Back then they did not plow or salt most streets and most people had rear wheel drive cars. I had a 1972 Camaro and the thing would just sit in one spot and spin - no traction whatsoever. And the forecasting was none existent. Most of us went home oblivious not knowing what was coming and very few of us went to the grocery store and stocked up on groceries. It was a nightmare.

Blizzard of 77 I was 17. I'm 63 now and lived through MANY MANY of Buffalo winters..... The recent November 2022 storm when we got over 6 feet.. The Christmas Blizzard of 2022 [ which caused 40 deaths ] The November 2014 storm dropped 7 feet , There were more here & there, but IMO The Bizzard of 77 was "THE WORST" I have ever experienced so far in my lifetime. Buffalo ALWAYS gets the bad rap about Lake Effect snow , when the countys east of Lake Ontario get POUNED almost EVERY year with much much more snow that we get here in Buffalo . its all good though .. I LOVE BUFFALO & I wouldn't what it any other way. ......🏈 GO BILLS 🏈 ......

You know what's sad is how judgemental people have become back then people were willing to help out and without backstabbing and Judging you people would get you a pack of smokes weather they smoked or not now not only would they not help you but give you an unwanted lecture about smoking thinking they are doing something to help you. B.S.! I fully understand the dangers of smoking it as just an example of how people have changed from willing to help you no matter what to finding any reason possible so they don't feel guilty about ignoring the situation.

I was 17 and made a bundle with our old hardly-running snowblower; (it took me hours to get it running). When my father returned home from doing nothing, he discovered that I had made over $200.00 with *his snowblower* he just put his hand out and said, "Fork it over!" I think I had steam shooting out of my ears lol; I was so angry! But my brother and I had a blast making gigantic tunnels and forts to have snowball fights in the snow!

I don’t know how insurance firms operate in the United States, but in the United Kingdom, and in my personal experience, insurance policies I have had, have worked for me, just last month (August 2019) my television decided to break down, and having rung the insurance company, a tv 📺 engineer came out and took my tv for repair, within 24 hours they said it was beyond repair, and within three days I had a brand new tv, to a higher specifications than my old one, at no extra charge to me. That’s not my only positive experience with insurance companies. Ok, I might be the exception to the rule, but they aren’t all bad in my opinion.

Wasn't funny the Whole Country called us SNOW CAPITAL OF USA. It sucks we still average 10-12 feet every winter from Lake Erie. Why of all other Citys near 5 Great Lakes does Buffalo get most snow. Some years we have to cancel ST PATS PARADE because of too much snow & that's in March. That's not all wrong with Buffalo we lost 4 Superbowls. Are Bars are open till 4am. I think bars are open because we have a lot of Irish & Polish Folks here. This is hard to believe they call us Miami of the north because we have lots of 90 degree days in summer.
