Reasons to head South? How about that the highest forecasted temperature for the next 10 days in Green Bay is less than 1/2 of the lowest, low forecasted temperature in Tampa, Florida? 😂 When your home is a van, trading ☃ for 🌴 is a no brainer! Of course I say this as I'm still in snowy Michigan visiting my own family for the holidays, but the sunny weather is a calling! If the weather isn't convincing enough, I could sent you a copy of the $900 repair bill that the previous owner of my van received from the dealer when they forced open the frozen sliding door. 😟 The cable system in these PM doors is very prone to failure as they can stretch with abuse and then won't open the door, even when they're not frozen. Or the old receipt for $450 for new house batteries because the battery bank failed when it was allowed to drop too low in freezing temps (Lead acid batteries when allowed to go too low will actually freeze). Needless to say, I hope that you've already managed to get everything warmed up and back to functioning properly! The snow is pretty, but so is the sun! ***On a side note, that fuse location on you battery doesn't make sense to me??? Perhaps I am incorrect, but from here it looks like the B2B will still be receiving power even if that fuse blows.

Hey Anna, consider adding a third method of charging your house batteries. I have a samlex AC > DC charger. It allows me to plug into any AC outlet and charge my DC house batteries. And the best part is that it’s a relatively cheap piece of electrical equipment 🙂

You inspire me. I'm 48 now and wish I'd made more choices to be more independent and free. I'm recently disabled, about a year and a half now and have really struggled with my new reality. I used to be fiercely independent and not rely on anyone. One day my life shifted and it's been an uphill battle ever since. Your videos have helped me see how anyone can live how they want and be whoever they want to be. Vanlife videos in general have helped me understand that living in a smaller space doesn't mean just existing - but living life to the most with what you have, even if it's a smaller space. Not only that, as a woman from a small village in the north of England, I've been able to follow your journey, see new areas that I never would have known existed and been able to follow such an inspiring young woman as you seek out and determine your own path in life.

I like the Anna Uncut segment :) One thing they don't often tell you about Lithium/LifePo4 batteries is that they can't be charged when it's below freezing...so make sure the interior temperature of the van is above freezing before trying to charge them. I'd also suggest buying a multimeter to check if you're getting power to your DC-to-DC charger (the light that comes on is connected to an ignition wire, so it may not indicate that charger is working). Then you'll know if it's the fuse or not. If the charger is getting power when van is on, check the output side of the charger, and so on until you find a spot not getting power and then you can figure out where the problem is in the wiring.

Would the DC-DC converter have a cold temp shut off and a different setting for AGM and Lifepo4 batteries? I think I'd get a regular battery charger and an extension cord to the house along with an electric heater.

Use a regular automotive battery charger from a auto parts store or Walmart that you plug into your house AC and use that to charge up your vans batteries. It's basically a cheaper option to a AC to DC converter/charger.

Like others have said: Run an extension cord to your van for a small electrical heater or even a heat lamp. Open all the cabinets and delicate areas to let the heat move into those areas. A fan may help to keep the air circulating. Using the same extension cord plug in a 110 volt DC trickle charger to charge your batteries. You really should have some way to plug the van into shore power? So if you stay at a campground with electricity or even a friend's house, you can plug in and run the van and charge your batteries. Also.. WD40 on the door seals/gaskets, along with the area they touch will really help. WD40 is also great for door locks, graphite in locks gets wet and then freezes so don't use graphite.

Anna, you mentioned “gel” batteries however they look like Lithium. Many Lithium batteries have an onboard Battery Management System (BMS) that will protect the batteries from charging when temperatures drop below freezing. Your Renogy charger/inverter should be connected to an external outlet on your van so you can plug into an external source when available. This would allow you to keep your Webasto at 40 degrees to prevent batteries from freezing. And keep your batteries fully charged. Or even plug in a small portable electrical heather if power is available. If your batteries are Renogy they came with a dongle that plugs in and resets your batteries from storage back to the on setting. Your van seems reasonably equipped for winter use, but it takes some extra effort.

What you need is an electricians multimeter so could read voltages. If that fuse on your battery was good it would read zero volts from one end to the other. If were bad it would read 12v+ because it would be stopping the power there. Also you could read the output of the dc to dc chargerto verify it's working. Love your channel. FYI. Noone has ever been electrocuted by under 48 volts...ever. The 12 volt system itself cannot hurt you unless you dead short the battery causing a plasma arc to burn you or rupture the battery releasing the acid. Otherwise you can test your way around 12v without fear.

Glad you made it to family. If the goal is to sleep in your van, then definitely head South where it's safe to do so without hypothermia. I like how snow looks, but I don't like shoveling it or driving long distances in it (mostly because of other drivers.) I've driven in snow during heavy snowstorms for hundreds of miles, a few time for long trips made longer by the snow. I try not to complain about the heat of Summer and prefer to remind myself that my toes aren't cold. ;) Share whatever you are comfortable sharing. Your insights into yourself, life, and vanlife give me food for thought. The ending bloopers are great, definitely keep those. The world needs more laughs.

Hello Anna. This wouldn't help much with the water freezing, but for your comfort, you could try mounting a guarded light fixture (got a little protective cage around it) in your bunk area. Put in a 50-watt ceramic bulb heater (think reptile tank), and curtain off your bed. This would be a low power draw, and would generate heat to keep you warmer, and they do not generate light. Could up the bulb to 100 watt or more if power is available. Of course, keep flammable items away from it.

Apply silicone to the rubber door seals to prevent them from freezing to each other. Forcing the door open may damage them, which may cause leaks. It's also beneficial to bring your wipers inside when parked so they don't freeze to your windshield.

If you are staying in the house for any longer take your battery's in , keep them inside for a day or to before charging them up and invest in a charger you can plug into say a house outlet, then head south, ps take in your water, especially don't force taps or pump take it inside as well let it thaw out naturally and don't try to use it unless it's got for sure no ice in it , when back in van for a day or to use water jug until your back up to temperature.

I just realized the DC to DC charger is not necessary. Just installed isolation switch. Lot simpler. Switch charges Van battery when it’s running but cuts it when the engine stops. But what’s great is If your van battery died, you can use bypass button to supply power from the van batteries to the engine battery. .(PriusLife Nomads Off Grid Community)

Hi Anna, As far as water goes you might consider a different set up if you’re going to be living in winter. I have a truck camper and have water in it six months of the year but I chase the snow for snowboarding in the winter for six months of the year and I use Cambro Containers, those big brown insulated boxes you see and hotels or conventions. They will freeze but it takes longer then you can add hot water to them if needed, the plastic is also less toxic than most. And yes as someone else said you need to rv AC/DC converter. That way whenever you’re near a house and an outlet you can plug in. And then you need a way to make sure that you keep your solar panels clear. Like I said I have a truck camper but I have seen side ladders on vans but you’ll need someway to make sure the snow doesn’t accumulate. Your DC to DC charger should be working. I’m not familiar with the The fuse you have on the van battery are use the circuit breaker that way if I have to say jump my vehicle I can break the circuit and not worry about damaging any electronics in the truck camper and you don’t have to replace fuses it’ll just tripped when it needs to and then you can reset it you’ll have to figure out what amperage you need but they make a a wide variety. I don’t use a diesel heater but that looks like a good idea with your van yeah I have heard they are a little temperamental so you might want to add about that heater. Since I’m already carrying a lot of propane I take a Mr. buddy heater the medium size one. I also have a line that goes directly into a big tank so I don’t have to use a lot of those small green canisters but you can refill those from your big tank if you still want to use the green canisters. But yes living in winter takes a whole different set of skills and prep like carrying two heating systems and making sure you have no water in your lines or pumps so they don’t get hurt when they freeze. The benefits are great though do you have the place to yourself. I’m currently at mono lake in California after skiing the week at Mammoth Mountain and there’s not a soul around me. You can’t find that during the rest of the time of the year it’s priceless and safer as far as people goes. Anyways good luck it’s, worth the effort.

Spray some silicone for rubber all over your door seals. Keep some Deicer spray to use on your keyhole. Sometimes if I HEAT YOUR CAR KEY , BEFORE you put it in the door, it will help you get your door unlocked. It it USUALLY easier to open the front doors FIRST. Then run the Van for a long time until the Van heats up completely. There are HEATING ATTACHMENTS to put on your radiator hose, Also 12 volt heating pads AROUND your water containers to keep you water from freezing up.

Hey Anna, I love the winter too! It looks so peaceful, just beautiful where there. In my country it hardly ever snows anymore, which is very sad. Maybe a winter tip for your Van, find a sort of grease to put on the door catchers and rubbers around your doors, making it like sort of a film. Not too much. I don't know what you call it in English, but we call it something like sort of a vaseline. In autoshop you should find it. I'm also not sure about the fuse you showed us, it looks like it just sits on top of the contacts and not really be a bridge between the wires? If you have acces to a electric multimeter you can test the fuse. I'm sorry for my English, it's not my first languages. Best wishes for the new year :)

I laughed so hard, I had tears running down my face! I learned the hard way not to go to the car wash to get rid of the metal-eating salt they put on our roads. Or, at least if I have to go, to bring a towel to wipe down the rubber seals around the doors. I can't tell you how many time I had to drag out an extension cord and a hair dryer to defrost a lock or a door so I could get to work. Or, how many times I just had to hibernate and wait until it warmed up. Two years ago, I read on KZbin about a silicone spray you can buy at the auto parts store and spray in your locks, or on the rubber seals and they won't freeze. It works! Before winter, spray and lightly wipe everything. I also do the squeaky door hinges with it. I love it! I don't know what to do with the electrical system though. You have such a great outlook! It will keep you alive! P.S. I slid right under my Jeep trying to yank on the door like you did to get it open. I just laid on the ground laughing until I could finally extricate myself! Safe travels!

Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but to open side-doors in the winter when they have been frozen, you could take the fingers in at the back of the door where the slider is, and pull abit, if you reach both the handle and that spot, you might open the door more easy :-) love from Norway... Several ways to solve your auxiliary battery recharging issue. 1) van runs which charges up main battery followed by auxiliary, hopefully van has high output alternator 2) small generator that runs to recharge system, downside nosy and lose space plus extra fuel consumption. 3) install disconnect separating main battery from auxiliary then use a battery recharging system that converts ac to dc, recharge battery if access to power available. 4) install solar on roof to charge battery or use deployable for recharging, deployable also tend to work with portable battery units as well. 5) can always have a portable backup Battery that your diesel heater can plug into as backup, Jakery as example. Many more options out there for you and headed south or staying north either way you can experience different issues with different experiences. Personally I would recommend insulating your batteries as if your going to be driving in Canada or Alaska. Water system can also be insulated to shield it from cold. Best of luck and have a great year!

The birds already figured this out. Fly South young one. Also, a lot of great solutions already commented for you. Many batteries or solar controls have a low temperature disconnect because charging batteries at or below freezing will cause damage. A diesel heater is a great way to keep your van warm 24/7 which will allow you to charge your batteries. But you figured out that heading south is also an option. Gulf Coast is nice this time of year.

Hi Anna, Just recently found your channel. Thanks for sharing, I enjoy seeing your travels. A small hint about frozen stuff like van door handles, water valves etc. When Frozen they all break very easily! Don't try to force them. For exterior door handles get a can of windshield deicer or warm them up. The handles are plastic and a broken door handle kind of makes the vehicle undriveable? The inside pipes etc. just need to be warmed up. Frozen pipes usually results in broken parts so be prepared? I learned about frozen door handles the hard and expensive way! haha. Best of luck in your travels!

Yeah enjoying a cold winter is all about having a warm and comfortable space. If you can figure that out this year then I’d say stay, it looks like you’re in a gorgeous and peaceful forest all to you a very wonderful place to be. But if you can’t make it comfortable you can go south and try it another year. I would say a propane or gas generator would solve your problem as a backup. You can live in it as long as the interior is above freezing. A small heater and the cabinet doors open. Even if you run the engine/ van heater..it will help. This will keep your sliding door from freezing shut as well. If there is any moisture on the rubber gasket..it’s gonna freeze shut. We used a 100 watt light bulb in an area to keep it from freezing. 100 watt 24/7 lasts about a month. It’s just enough! The problem is if you don’t have battery power. Are your batteries frozen as well? The problem u may have is when stuff freezes it expands..like your jugs and such. A roll of reflex tic or something simple like the foil windshield shade between the jugs and that wooden access area near the slider. On going South..that is up to you..a lot of van folks spend the winter in Quartzsite , Slab City etc..it’s a matter of what you want. Hang in there girl..

I just came in from outside (in Wisconsin) working on my van, I just enacted the very same scene with the sliding door stuck - came in to warm up my hands and I watched this. You are beautiful and making fantastic videos - everything will work out. As a much older fellow Wisconsinite (and yes, I also drive myself crazy when I hear myself say “Wiss-can-sin) - I will suggest just one thing this time - head to Arizona ASAP.

Another really engaging video. The authenticity is real (can it ever not be?) - I know what I mean. I think you will have to go south in the winter, and why not? It is what some birds choose to do and it makes sense. Be careful when you start to defrost though. Last winter we couldn't travel to Spain as we usually do, and our van was in England and subjected to some cold spells. We had drained the water but a little was stuck in our kitchen tap and the expansion caused the mechanism to crack, and then leak... I love your channel and it improves all the time. Thanks for making the videos and living your life in this way. And for sharing some of it with me. 💖❤️💖

Use a regular automotive battery charger from a auto parts store or Walmart that you plug into your house AC and use that to charge up your vans batteries. It's basically a cheaper option to a AC to DC converter/charger. Ps. You want to use this charger for charging only, its not made for use as a converter.

Happy new year! Keep the vids coming….even though you’re not in your van right now. My furnace is going all day in Illinois,I can just imagine how cold it is in that van! Oh,silicone spray on the rubber weatherstripping on your van door will help it not get frozen shut. Take care!!

There's a diesel heater on Amazon which a pair of vanlifers love and it's not too expensive. I'd like it for my truck, too. It apparently gives good heat in subzero temps. ...I love your video, but subzero temps are just so tiring and you can't make a nice fire where and when you want. ...Anna, I feel a similar kinship with you. I love your bloopers. I suggest driving south from where you are. A change of scenery, and it could be warmer, less snow. Happy 2022!

@@williamryan9195 ah yeah missed that.. looks like if it’s already installed and battery charging (or lack of) is the issue... Anna I suggest, looking at installing on/off toggle switch on positive wire and route direct to battery (extra battery if needed) and use a power bank (Jackery, etc or equivalent) or regular charger to keep battery topped off for use with the Heater. Obviously everything will freeze once heat is removed from van for a length of time but you should be able to thaw things out and get back warm.

Hi Anna, you need to try Cubic Mini wood stove. We have an Espar D2 heater and a back up Cubic Mini wood stove, we end up using wood stove as primary heater to heat, cook food and dry out the condensation. Cleaning carbon buildup for wood stove is much easier than for D2 heater. Also even the smallest Cubic mini cub pump out 5~7 times more heat than Espar D2 which make really cold days more comfortable.

Happy New Year! Welcome back - it was good to see the mug hanging out in the driver's seat again. Ahh, Wisconsin! Best fish & chips I ever had was in Wisconsin. Go south!?!? What? Why would you want to go south, and leave all that??? Why, it is only 54 degrees in Sedona today, 79 degrees in Tampa, 58 degrees in San Diego, and only about 70 degrees in Baja right now. Trade minus 14 degrees at night, knee deep snow, & coyotes howling for balmy, sunny warmth? If only you could just pick up and go anywhere your heart wants to go...

Ohhh Anna! This video was perfect! I love "uncut Anna". The person put it perfectly, yes Thank you for inviting us into your world. You are in our world too. At least a little. I love watching to see where you (and Maddie too) to see what you are up to. I was smiling throughout the Anna Uncut and the Bloops! I am sorry you cannot reach out to your Dad. Is there any way you can plug into the house and charge your batteries. If they are the lead type batteries, will it be ok to not charge them for awhile? Not to make you more worried than you already are. The thing too is that, you know how hard the cold can be. It may be charging very slowly and minimally just because of the cold. Can you get your Van into a warm shop for 24 hrs, just to warm and thaw it out? Maybe the batteries will start to charge more effectively. I agree Winter is a nice season except for the freezing cold temps. Otherwise it would be lovely. No you cannot live in a Van at -25°C. That would be dangerous. Can you wait to go out again till maybe March 1st? By then hopefully you will be over the worst snow and cold. Have a great week. Stay safe and warm! Eileen ❄☃️🐧💕🇨🇦

In my part of the world when it gets better or cold we open the cabinets under our sinks so that he gets to the pipes. Try that and see how that helps. Also cold weather can wear down batteries. So again I would keep the cabinets open to your electrical system.

Winters can be beautiful but they do make life more complicated. I live in Massachusetts for 70 years. I know this is too late to help last month but may help for next time. If you take note of the voltage on the MPPT & then start the van, the voltage should rise slowly to more than 12v if the DC to DC charger is working correctly. Once the engine warms up a little, you an run the van heater to raise the inside temp but it may not defrost everything. AGM batteries should be able to charge below freezing but may respond slowly and usable amps will be lower than when warm. Spraying your door gaskets with vegetable oil may help you get the doors open.

Anna, letting faucets freeze will crack it fast. Freezing thing like pumps will crack it. You need a cheap RMS voltage meter to see where the problem is. From van batteries, you will see around 14 volts. Trace across the fuse to the charger. Should be same voltage to the charger. You really need diesel heater to keep to van above freezing. Or there will be lot of damage. Come visit and I will help you. I am an electrical engineer and lifetime mechanic. I plan to have Free repair facility for Nomads. Ohhhh yes! We were feeling it last video. I like Anna Uncut. But as others have suggested, get yourself a hand held multimeter. They are worth their weight in gold when trying to troubleshoot electrical problems. A descent one will cost about $50. It comes with instructions. Hardware stores carry them as well as electrical supply stores. Sometimes a couple of high wattage incandescent light bulbs can produce enough heat along with some insulation in a small space to act as a heater can make a difference. Stay warm. 🦊🚗

I live in NW Indiana, and we have not gotten that much snow, but bitter temps too! Stay safe driving on our crazy midwest roads! I forgot to mention how happy it was to see Nala in the last video! I feel so bad, but I thought she had "crossed the bridge," so it was good seeing her cute little furry face! Anyhoo, Anna... you should most def go south, just for your own safety. What about exploring places that don't get too cold at night like the desert SW can. Like maybe MS, AL, FL, or even like Texas or something? I don't think those places have the BLM land of the west, but there are plenty of van lifers out there who I'm sure do know. Anyway, I was also going to suggest a book - one of my students (I'm old - I'm a French teacher) gave me a book to read over break and it is amazing - it's called A Tree Lives in Brooklyn, and I thought you, as a voracious reader also, might enjoy it. Much love and safe travels to someplace warm!
