Winter Tree ID: Identify Hawthorn in Winter

Thorns growing out of the trunk? I never realised that. The hawthorn berries have been described as being the avocados of tree berries, due to their texture and taste.

Yes I've heard that one too. You can even make guacamole from them if you have the patience.

But they are not oily/fatty fruits. Will try it once. Love

We have a large (in length) hawthorn hedge in our garden. We also have quite a big cat population in our area and the sparrows use the hedge every year for nesting. Cats can't get near them. The birds also eat the leaf buds in spring.

Yes I found out hard way. Grabbed hold of a trunk in the woods and spiked my finger on one. Ended up in hospital with infected finger. Tetanus injection and 7 days penicillin. Once bitten twice shy .

Hawthorn is supposed to be good for Essential Tremor.
