If you are going to travel to the Southwest.. the best time would be from the Ist of November through Mid May... It's way too hot to enjoy in the summer....

I was fortunate to live in Tucson in the 80s. I loved it for so many reasons. I left on 87 to return to Colorado, then to Washington state. Circumstances changed I returned to Tucson, again fell in love. I knew a little about vanlife yet wasn’t ready. Again circumstances changed and I headed to Utah. Pandemic hit so not a whole lot of exploring going on. I have removed the seats in my minivan and have a temporary floor down. Unfortunately not a whole lot of money and inflation has given me even less with the cost of everything going up. I love Tucson and hope to come down next winter. I had shoulder surgery and am beginning the final PT to have complete use of my primary arm. Hope to meet you there! Safe travels to you and Joey. 😊✌🏼😎👍🏼

I made a homemade heater That's pretty cheap. It is an empty paint can with the lid and I put some holes on the side toward the top and put tea light candles that burn for 8 hours down at the bottom.

I've been to Tucson during winter several times & really enjoyed the area. I did make the mistake of going in July one time. That was a bit rough. Enjoy your time there and be careful with Joey. The coyotes can be pretty slick. They were having problems with them attacking dogs in town the last time I was there years ago.

Yes I recognized this spot. I wanted ask you just approximate what do you spend a month when you get free camping so groceries and gas plus other supplies you might need. I like that you stay in a place for two weeks. I’m really getting the itch retirement is 2023 and I’m trying to get ideas on cost. I’m like you it’s just me and my dog. I’m suffer with depression and anxiety so my only worry is needing people to talk to. Appreciate any advice. I’ve been watching you and Joey for awhile now. I’m so glad you got back out of the house. ❤❤

My son and I lived at Snyder hill for 4 months when we moved here after my father kicked us out. It’s safe for the most part, and honestly, except for being homeless it was a lot better than being in this little hole of an apartment in town…lot less people. Have fun!

We dropped in to the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures in Tuscon. Low cost and will far exceed any expectation you have and mine was not very high at all, just a way to spend some time. We have been back twice since.

You may not know about it but not far from where you are there's another free camping place called ironwood national monument. There's also some wild-ish 😜 horses there. I say ish because they'll come right up and eat out of your hand. 🥰

Make sure you lock up your vehicle when in Tucson. Lots of petty theft in that city. Homeless everywhere and at nearly every busy street light. Another Walgreens just closed there as there was too much shoplifting. Gas was as low as $2.87 a gallon at one of the Costco's. Just came from there 2 days ago and had a good time, but lock everything that you can lock up. Yes, there are a lot of good restaurants there. Enjoy your trip!

Hi Chantelle! I used to live in Tucson years ago. It is a beautiful place. I worked at the Buffalo Exchange. I worked at the main office/headquarters. I did payroll. We worked out of these cute little houses at the end of a cute little street. The company owned the last three houses on that street. All converted into offices. Fun place to work as well. Eugene has many other vegan options that I think are as good, or better than, the Viva Vegetarian cart. Morning Glory, B~Heavenly (cart), Lotus Garden, Cornbread Cafe, Cafe Yumm!, Laughing Planet, Tacovore (really good Tempeh & Tofu tacos), Mod Pizza (Daiya cheese), The Wheel Apizza Pub (cashew cheese), Voodoo Doughnut, Tasty Thai (2 locations), Ta Ra Rin, Saigon Cafe and Park Street Cafe. I'm sure I've left some out. B-Heavenly cart is Vegetarian and Vegan and never disappointed me. It's scrumptious, and just a few blocks North of Viva Vegetarian on Willamette Street/Broadway. For a sweet treat, head to Sweet Life in the Whitaker 'hood for some dairy and egg free desserts. Delish! I can never get out of there without taking a half a dozen to go, and of course, buying one with a coffee to eat there. Be prepared for a line, but it moves along quickly. It's walking distance from Tacovore, so grab a couple of tacos (street taco sized) and a bowl of their black bean soup (which comes with chips) first, then head to Sweet Life to top it off. Mmmm!!

Agree with your thoughts on Tucson. I miss living there, it is very under rated. If you haven't been to Patagonia, it's about an hour or so south of Tucson. Really cute town and a good amount of camp spots.

There is a thing to remember about AZ… it’s the elevation… that’s why when you could drive a couple hours or one hour … there’s a drastic differences in weather.

Van lifers should try staying at hospitals for a safe overnight parking place in a city. It’s always open. They won’t know you’re in your car vs inside. Park far off away from any main entrances. Not in a crowded area or emerg. Just passing through a city but can’t find a safe place to park for a night might be an option.

Wow. Showers are now $17! Whoa. I spent 5 weeks in Tucson last March on the other BLM land just east of where you're at. I should have scoped out this area, but it was ok. Close to stuff you need and it's fun city. I loved the light rail that goes around town. And I loved the university's museums. Stay warm! Forecast even there is not looking great.

Forest land in AZ is often leased to ranchers for cattle grazing. I hike the Arizona trail a lot in that area from Sonoita to Tucson. Lots of sweet cows.
