Winter Wild Edibles | Madrone Berries (Arbutus menziesii)

Foraging in Oregon in January is slim pickins'.That said, there are a few plants that bear edible fruit during the cold winter months (Nov.- Feb.) in the Pacific Northwest. Madrone (Arbutus menziesii) is a good tree to know when there’s snow on the ground.

I like the entire video focused on one edible plant. I feel like I’ll definitely remember this one. The videos showing multiple edible plants are hit or miss. I’ll remember some of them but not all.

Awesome video! 💮 I love snacking on a few Arbutus unedo Berries (there's a tree a few blocks from me), and always wondered about Madrone! My mother in law was a botanist and forager. She often said exactly what you suggest with new-to-you edibles - be sure of identification, try a little bit at first, and watch for reactions!! That served well - - she passed a few years ago at 103

Yes this time of year in some places it's more of a challenge to find wild edibles. The hunter gathers might have followed the snow line down to rivers and oceans where they had other options, clams, seaweeds etc. Would be good subject material. One of McDodge's favorites on Discovery Channel, maybe he has a KZbin channel now?

again and again you are just so informative and relatable man! i live on the east coast, so no pacific tree berries 4 me this january- but fascinating none the less... And, in the grand scheme of things, who's ta say i wont end up scattered ta Cali one day anyway!! I love the Jacksonville area... My favorite stand of these trees is in the Jacksonville Cemetery which is a fascinating Pioneer Cemetery. I would love to hike this trail you are on, maybe you could share the area of the "trailhead"??? Beautiful dog! I like how you are training your dog! :) Somehow I missed out on notifications for your videos till now, I think I subscribed a while ago... but that is the problem with KZbin. .... Thanks for posting this information... I love it! I am going to try some of these Madrone berries.
