Saw my first winter wren today on an island in Lake of the Woods Ontario, 1800km north of Toronto, 2 hours east of Winnipeg. So lucky, as it's my second last day here. I wonder if they respond to pishing because right after I did it, he came right out and perched about 10 feet away out in the open! Great video!

I got this eastern wren birdsong from a PA friend when I wrote that NYTimes' articles re coyotes in NYC and the yearly return of ospreys made the world seem as though it were still operating by some of the old rules. The sounds of the wrens were not as I remembered Pittsburgh wrens of LONG ago but when one of the excerpts was slowed down I heard something more familiar in the tone-quality. I wondered if birdsong like many speech patterns has speeded up over the century. There is a little more screech and less flowing warble than I recall. You look, in your environment there and your omni presence, as though you might know; if not maybe omni-skills can question ornithologists at Cornell. They may be just the ones to have the Answer.

Have a pair in rear garden & frequently get °SERENADED° by them. For such TINY Birds They've certainly got a LOUD Voice. One came up to kitchen window as I was doing some washing up and Just carried on Searching for live food on branches & twigs nearby [ as though there was NOTHING Else but him & the buggy branches ] for SEVERAL MINUTES !! CHEEKY ▪︎▪︎ Is quite an UNDERSTATEMENT

What kind of bird singing in the background? Sounds like reo reo reo but raspy sounding. I can't figure it out anyone know? Much appreciated :)
@adamburnett497410 жыл бұрын
I think what you're hearing is a Scarlet Tanager. Other background birds include Veery, Black-throated Green Warbler, and Red-eyed Vireo, with brief performances from Black-capped Chickadee and Ovenbird too. There may be others that I missed. Is that a Tennessee Warbler at 0:13 and 0:44?

we have winter wrens in europe too but i think they are still different species as the scientific name for ours is Troglodytes troglodytes while your american one is Troglodytes hiemalis. yours also sound less louder than ours and seems to continue with a warble after the trill ours don't or rarely do
