Martin, congrats on this milestone! It looks like the right side clock escapement is not functioning properly. The gear is not actually interacting with the bottom pallet. The slo-mo at 18:07 shows this really well.
@Zoltan543 жыл бұрын
It appear that Martin added a metal pin which is engaging the escapement wheel instead of the bottom pallet. Likey a prototype addition trying to remedy the runaway escapement under high marble pressure. This may be a one off design that is no longer necessary because of the pressure reducing wiggles and would explain why it's never mentioned. If it is needed, look forward to it in a future video!
@mcbeenb3 жыл бұрын
Yea something has gone seriously wrong here and not covered in the video. The bottom of the escapement IS the regulator. I'm wondering is the problem is how far those fingers are moving away from the escapement (looks like over 10cm). It is excessive and will slow the machine down too. Ideally it would only move a cm or two.
@Anya-B.3 жыл бұрын
@@mcbeenb No no, that's not the problem. The problem is very well know from the discord community (they forsaw it happen), and it has to do with the geometry of the teeths and the pallets ... Check the #idea-vaults in the discord server to see a graphic version (Martin really need to see this !)

I might be wrong on this but i think its the spring strength in combination with the fact that the force created from the teeth is out of alignment with the point or rotation of the pallet(tik tok part) thus creating a moment (force*distace). Someone can correct me if im wrong. I still dont get why he didnt go with the broken escapement mechanism which was not pressure sensitive. He talked about less parts in that vid and then overengineered these mechanisms(imo) with so many parts, although i like all of it except the fact that he created this spring linkage and didnt use the broken escapement. There is a design error. The bottom pallet/tooth angle is not at right angles to the pallet pivot, which means the pallet can "cam out" when the wheel is pushed hard enough. The cad team have a fix designed and tested. Means new wheels and pallets, but the rest of the gate can be unchanged.

Videos like this remind me that Martin is a fucking excellent musician that has managed to bridge across into becoming a great mechanical engineer. This fusion of art and science is so rarely done well, but this while thing absolutely slaps. The music in this episode also brings back home what this this is all about. Can’t wait to see what music gets made with this machine.

That was the most impressive journey through the life of a product development ever. And of a developer as well. I took me three days for all 172 videos on this channel and I realized more and more how much the marble machine X and Martin overlap with my professional life. In real life, I'm a member of a team that develops products for fiber optic infrastructure. Such as connection closures, fiber optic distribution cabinets and wall boxes. The team gets bigger and bigger in the course of product development, because more and more tasks are added up to industrialization and series production. But we start with three people. The CAD designer, the maker (me) and the planner. These three people form the core team from the first idea and accompany the product through to the first delivery to our customers. It was extremely exciting for me to see how Martin embodies these three tasks, sometimes more sometimes less. With the marble machine X, I learned a lot about the interplay of roles and overcoming boundaries and restrictions. Thank you for these instructive hours. I think they will be helpful when working on my team.

This is such a great example of what engineering is like sometimes. First you have the elaborate and thought through plan, that is tested in small scale, and that works on paper. But in the final moment, it all fails, and then you just have to throw something together anyway. Great work, you passed the master-test!

Thank you so much for hanging in there Martin, and not letting the haters get to you, or all the people who think they're real engineers just because they bought a piece of paper without doing the work. You and Rick Cavallaro are true heroes and an inspiration to so many people, helping to bring engineering back to its hands-on and brains-on roots, proving that almost anything is possible when there's a passion.
@generessler62823 жыл бұрын
"They bought a piece of paper without doing the work" is a pretty silly statement. I guess you're talking about college-educated engineers. It's hubris to think there's no work in an engineering degree. And it's hubris to believe that no one who works through a degree program has practical skills. Martin himself has frequently lamented that a "real engineer" would know more economical, if not better ways of doing what he's done. He's accomplished a truly, deeply magnificent thing here. But a professional engineer in a production setting could never have afforded the way he did it.
@wedmunds3 жыл бұрын
It's not possible to simply buy an engineering degree.
@alakani3 жыл бұрын
@@generessler6282 Nah that's why I mentioned Rick as well, he's formally trained and did all the math ahead of time, but people still said don't even try. I just think some production engineers forget that R&D engineers are a thing. You hit the nail on the head - some engineers might know better ways, but that's irrelevant if they would never even try to build something like this, or share their knowledge

The expectation buildup with instruments added each time... when the msic finally came together after the 10000th marble dropped, I had tears coming to my eyes, because I could feel Martin's feelings, I could see the end of the journey and the relief of it all. Finally, music with MMX! It feels like Martin has achieved an insane milestone, and now just has to repeat the same known and proven process for the other channels. No more surprises, right? Live concert by the end of the Summer, right? This feels absolutely good, and I can't wait for this channel to transition from an engineering channel to a music composing channel.
