A popular thing in Japan for winter is to stick bubble wrap on windows It works surprisingly well (you need the thick bubble wrap and use water to cling it to the glass) Also prevents condensation to a degree because the bubble wrap is stuck on the glass pane

I like your idea of getting two windows out of one piece of foam. You’re not looking for absolute perfection and you’re not looking forward to be pretty. Functionality is the most important thing. Especially in winter.

I always use a box cutter for this kind of insulation, slice, crack slice, far less messy and easier

I am hella curious how this ends up working out for you- I will be anxiously awaiting the update. And Yason please, for the love of life, put a mask on then you are cutting up foam. You are going to give yourself some crazy version of foam legionnaires disease breathing that crap in. FoamPneumonia 😂PLEASE don’t! Future Yason will thank you.❤

Looking forward to seeing this works. I lived by the beach years ago and would use heavy plastic and change to a heavier drape. Made a big difference.

This had some helpful info, I’m currently renovating an old house in Japan and want to semi-permanently block off a window. Thanks
@gemdcreationsАй бұрын
Oh Jason. It does not matter what the insulation looks like, at this point, you just need things to be warm!! Get as many windows as you can out of one sheet. I was thinking that you space heater might be set to 55°, but over near the interior wall, the temp may have dropped - hence giving you a lower reading on that gauge. I have trust in you to figure it all out. And yes, you were starting to look like a snowman with all that foam dust...lol. Looking forward to Part 3.

On the table saw: 1) It came cheap because it is missing the guide rail, an important feature and 2) pros use a stick to guide the piece, not their fingers. Absence of the guide rail makes that more difficult. It might be possible to fabricate a guide rail from some scrap wood.

As an emergency measure to keep the heat in and drying out the damp/wet walls so you can work on fixing the walls and Windows at a later date and time such as the spring and summer months . This keeps our the damp and cold weather and gives you a chance to get some more work done on the inside of the building .

Have you looked into or considered any government or historical society grants for restoration? Another option is gofundme or even a construction loan... some times you can find funding in strange places. Maybe reach out to some roof/windows installers about a sponsorship. It's great that you are finding lower cost alternatives, but honestly just the maintenance on this place seems overwhelming for one person. Let alone the bigger jobs that are needed to keep it from further deterioration. Some things you may have to weigh the costs and benefits to hiring the work out. I hope you are able to find the money to get it done one way or another. You have a brilliant mind for this type of work!

Two things you can 3d print for that table saw, a push stick, and a feather board. Both would make it slightly less dangerous

Bad suggestion here: pellet stoves heat large areas pretty well and are relatively easy to install (it only needs an exhaust port drilled in the wall, and a normal electric outlet). Something to consider!
@judylapointe3507Ай бұрын
Try using an electric knife for cutting the foam. I heard that works but I cannot confirm.

in a pinch for your windows, you can do what they do in japan and korea and cover it with thick bubble wrap has the air pockets and keeps out the draft

Maybe get a cheap phone IR camera to check for cold spots. We assume it all window loss but you never know.

Hurrah!! You used my udea for Shrink Wrap for the Windows. Its temporary fix and cost effective for Winterizing. Its would be huge expense for new Window Replacement. There is no easy solution when it comes to draft and cold air from Old Windows. You have to worry about high heating bill.

Does it matter if the foil like side is facing the outside or inside? Use a push stick to push stuff through that table saw (this comes from someone who has only watched table saw use.)

It might be a good idea to wear some type of mask any time you’re cutting that insulation. You can inhale tiny bits of it as it becomes airborne .

Your face is still there, your fingers need a push stick for that table saw. I'd delegate to one of the Branch Managers when out on property rounds.😂👍

My first attempt at posting got auto deleted by KZbin. Try again with some keyword deletions - Styrofoam cutting: I had a project this summer where I needed to cut the exact same styrofoam building panels. I tried conventional saws and came out covered in white dust and particles like I came in from a snow storm. But they didn't melt away like the snow. I found a hot wire cutter on ______ for about $15. It worked well. Made clean cuts because is melts as it goes along. The downside is that 1) the cuts may be a little wobbly depending on your hand steadiness, but with practice and a straightedge that can be improved and 2) it is somewhat slow, but acceptable for small projects. One particular benefit is that you can cut non-straight shapes like curves. These devices are widely available on ____ for about half the ______ price if you can wait for shipping from _____. Based on various very positive internet recommendations, I bought a specialty jigsaw blade to try. I was done by the time I received it and did not try it: _____ T113A3 ...
