So he could focus more on vocals and his improve overall performance on stage. He is a lot more active and comfortable looking on stage now.

He got 25% of his lungs removed, he was in the army back in a day and he got tuberculose

from what I've gathered, it's a health issue carrying, standing and playing the guitar. He is still the studio guitarist for the albums and on the upcoming Time II which just finished
