The issue was not about her citizenship or its validity. The issue that started this whole debate is the fact that CULTURALLY she is not South African, she does not represent South African heritage or culture, she does not follow or practice our customs or speak our indigenous languages, so the question was asked “is she fit to represent the nation and its people on the world stage?”. Yes she is a South African on paper so she has the right to compete but does she have the lived South African experience? Does she represent the average South African woman in any capacity? Or will she wear the South African title but fly her Nigerian flag high? - THAT is our main concern.

We literally have more culturally in common with white, Indian and Coloured South Africans than we do with Nigerians, Ethiopians, Congolese etc.. A child born in South Africa to non South African parents is not a South African citizen according to our own law but will be a South African permanent resident just like her parents, she will have the same ID document as the rest of us but one code will tell the story. The miss SA organizers never verified with the Home Affairs whether she is a citizen. Like wise a child of South African parents born in Nigeria will be South African according to our law. Some people who are in our Parliament were born outside the country while their parents were in exile, yet we consider them to be South Africa. There is no Xenophobia here. If she obtained her citizenship lawfully and meets all the requirements, then she's South African enough to contest just like past contestants and winners who were of European or Asian origin. The 1959 Miss Nigeria winner (Nene Etule) is a pure Cameroonian. We have Nigerians whose dad's or moms are from other African countries especially Ghana and Cameroon, and we don't discriminate against them.
