No. 3452 was the first Class 25 locomotive built by North British Locomotive Company (NBL), Glasgow, Scotland. It was delivered to South African Railways in 1953. The patented steam condensing tender was produced by Henschel und Sohn, Kassel, Germany.
Steam turbines and the fans driven by them fitted inside the smokebox and tender gave these locomotives their unique sound. No. 3452 was never fitted with the "banjo" modification to the front of the smokebox that extended the life of the draft fan blades.
Over the years infrastructure improved alleviating the scarcity of water in the areas served by the Class 25. In the early seventies No. 3452 was the first of its class to be converted to Class 25NC by removal of the steam condensing equipment. The work was carried out at the S.A.R. workshops, De Aar, South Africa.
