If you ever wonder why the first models of Playstation had separate stereo audio output: this is the answer. It never supposed to use the TV speaker for audio.

separate stereo audio is due to to RCA cables. There were plenty of TV that support RCA so it was designed also to use TV speaker.

@lor727 yeah, correct, it was a pro-consumer choice, for using standard RCA and s-video cables. But PlayStation games pushed audio design so hard that seems just natural using those separate audio output to hook it to a serious audio equipment.
