You have it backwards. Laurel people hear better because they are able to detect some of the missing low frequencies better than those of "Yanny" people.

This has a visual equivalent. When something is rotating fast, like a fan (but not fast enough to be a blur), you can interpret the rotation as clockwise or counterclockwise. When you look at a picture of an open cube (three sides) then you can interpret it as looking at the inside or the outside of the cube, depending on how you focus on it. It is reversible with effort. The same happens when both your eyes see something very different than what the other eye is seeing, you can focus on one image or the other but it takes a lot of conscious effort to 'switch' what you see.

I heard it both ways. The same audio, the same room. The only notable thing different was that I heard "Laurel" while I was relaxed and tired, and "Yanny" when I was more serious and awake.

You can do this in person, with just your voice. Here's how; make a small circle with your thumb and index finger, and put it up against your mouth, like a trumpet mouth-piece. In a low voice, repeat the word "girl" over and over with no pauses in between; just "girlgirlgirlgirl". If you do this, people will either hear "girl" in your low voice, or they will hear the word "dewey" in a much higher voice. Try it right now; you can sorta make yourself hear the high-pitched "dewey" even though you know you're saying the word "girl" in a regular, low voice. No idea why this works, but it's been around for at least 20 years (when I first found about it). Probably a lot longer than that though. Test it out.

I heard "geearrry" (ɡəˈree), and could not hear "Laurel" - even when concentrating on it. I wondered if it had something to do with the acoustics, my expectation or approach on the accent, or simply something unknown at the time. Then, surprisingly, the next day - on the same site (listening through the same source - my cellphone), all I could hear was "Laurel," and could not hear "Yanny" - even when concentrating on it. Understandably, I found this all to be quite strange, especially as someone with a musical ear who can approach accents, lead-in notes and/or sung lyrics in ways which alter their sounds. This was just - strangely different. What's interesting to note, is that as I played it for someone else (for their first time and my second), all that person could hear was "geearry" as I originally had. I'm curious to see if the pronunciation now processes differently for that other person, too, just a day or two later.
