In this edition of "A World of Difference," Korey Kiepert, owner and engineer with The Gravity Group, goes through the 8 main types of roller coasters and breaks down how they work as well as the decisions behind why they get built in the first place. Korey explains the difference between a giga coaster and a strata coaster, as well as what separates a "wild mouse" from a "mine train."

The way they did the list is odd and illogical. Basically everything after steel/wooden coasters is actually a subset of the first two, and the seating differences are a subset of some of the others, too. @@fever1 lol, yup, that's me more or less. I can see how VR coasters could be nothing more than an unnecessarily tacked on gimmick to roller coaster enthusiasts, but I'd say just because it's usually not implemented well doesn't mean it can't be done. Give it, say, ten more years for the tech to improve, and for a pioneer coaster to come along and show the others how to do it well. If the VR/AR tech gets good enough, there's basically no limit to the visuals and theming you can add to a coaster ride.

I gotta make a correction on 4D coasters: Not all 4D coasters have uncontrolled spins. Rides like X2 and Eejanaika have a seperate track that controls the spin of the riders so you get the same ride every time. However, rollercoasters like Batman the ride at six flags fiesta texas or intamin zacspins do not have a controlled spin so it is a different ride everytime

Very deliberately left out a very popular emerging rollercoaster form (in the last ten years) The Hybrid coaster is steel track on a wooden structure, allowing the structure to take tighter hairpin turns, steeper drops, do inversions, and have more intense airtime. Often these Hybrid coasters are created by taking an old wooden coaster that is less popular, and using its structure to rebuild it as a new coaster. This has been seen with Steel Vengeance, Iron Rattler, The Joker (Six Flags Discovery Kingdom) and many many other coasters. The reason this was left out is because this guy’s company Gravity Group competes very directly with the company that makes hybrid rollercoasters (Rocky Mountain Construction)

When talking about 4D coasters he fails to make an important distinction between free spinning and controlled spinning types. He's mistaken when he says 4D coasters allow you to spin freely. At least in the case of X at magic mountain (which was the first 4D coaster) the spin around that axis is specifically controlled. For instance, during the near vertical drop, each rider is spun to face straight down. Each ride is exactly the same.

That's so funny that he mentioned a major aspect of the wild mouse rides being to question if they're even safe. I've been on a ton of rollercoasters in my life, but the wild mouse in Blackpool is still one of the scariest that I can remember. I genuinely felt like I was going to get thrown off the track, that thing was crazy. The seats are tiny on it too, me and my friend are both pretty skinny and could barely fit. A+ would ride again.

18:00 - Not to come off as pedantic, but the X2 coaster is not a free-spinning 4d coaster. It’s a distinction worth mentioning because one of the reasons X2 is so buttery smooth (and one of my favorite coasters), is because the rotations of the seats are specifically dictated by the portion of the track you’re currently on- there’s no randomness. The result is a smooth ride designed around your center of mass, which means less of that disorienting and painful whiplashed feeling. I make this correction with ZERO disrespect to the engineer here. He’s obviously very knowledgeable and knows his stuff and knows WAY more about coasters than I do! Just thought this one note was worth mentioning. This was a great video! Entertaining and educational! The best combination of things!
@coreym483
