I agree. I did not realise just how thought out every single movement was in a NASCAR pit stop, down to the number of steps between each objective. Not a real fan of the sport (at least not watching it) but you can't help respecting this meticulously choreographed pit dance. Fascinating video.

this is so fascinating. i think i’ve maybe seen three car races in my life - and i adore this video! and, some amazing lessons on just getting anything done in a team environment: working together, clear ideas on who is doing what, etc. i would actually show this to a class or group if it was appropriate to the topic.

I tried out the Pit Crew challenge at the NASCAR hall of fame! Our quickest time was 17 seconds. the pit crew for being able to do everything in such a short amount of time, that's impressive I know I'm not joining a pit crew anytime soon...

the jack person has the scariest task, imagine releasing the jack and you accidentally place a finger between the lift and the base of the jack with all the weight of the car. I know there’s a handle but compared to f1 jack, this is more insane.

Local tire shop: "So what we try to do is maximize the amount of distance our guys travel, so as you can see he puts down his tool, and takes 87 steps over to the desk to take a beverage break. Immediately after, he takes a maximum amount of time to walk over to his colleague so they can chit chat for no less than 15 to 16 minutes about what they're going to do that weekend. We teach them to always drop one or two lugnuts so they have to spend 17 minutes to look for it. We try to not service the tools so they start to malfunction and stretches the amount of time it takes to change the tires. We're always aiming for a minimum of 2 hours."

1. There's that center hub thing that gives the wheel something to rest on. Regular cars don't have that. So they don't have to have wheel aligned when placed on the hub. 2. After that, the wheel only needs to be turned a few degrees for the holes to match the studs. 3. Practice.

Worth noting that the new NASCAR cars only use a single lug per tire, a la F1. The amount of time to tighten that one lug is about the same as the five before.

That's how it works in a lot of racing series, but it's illegal to have more than 5 crew members over the wall in NASCAR for safety reasons.

They applies a bunch of thin layers of plastic that can be ripped off giving the driver a clean windshield. I reckon they thought the long pole with a squeegee was another obstacle or hazard.

how do the lugnuts stay on the wheel when they throw the new ones back on? Are the studs not threaded that far out? I know it doesn't matter much since they use one lug nut now but I've always been curious.

The new tires have the lug nuts glued onto the rim in place. The bolt pushes them off the rim and they're instantly ready to be tightened.

They glue the lug nuts to the wheel of the new tire. The adhesive is just strong enough to hold them until they are torqued on.

I was actually searching for "should I get my tires rotated at the dealership" then this video popped up.... if only the tire rotation was that quick at the Acura dealership. It took them a little over 2 hours to rotate and check the balance of my tires. (they promised to have me in and out within 30 minutes when I arrived) The rotation was free... but how much money was my two wasted hours worth? ☹

Just rules as far as I know, Nascar only allows 5 crew members over the wall. As for the new single lug nut vs the old 5 or 6, I have heard that there is al.oat no time difference. I think it's because that single hub nut takes a lot more tourque.

rules say they can only send 5 people over the wall. They're moving 90lb tires a jack, the large fuel can and the tools to remove and return the lugs as well. The 5 person limit restricts what they can do,

They do the right side first so that they can to the left second. That way as soon as the car is lowered, it can leave the pit without having to wait for the men and equipment to get out of the way.

Incredibly busy pit lanes with around 40 cars all coming for service at the same time, pit boxes i believe are closer than in Formula (1,2,3) series plus the rules state pit crew can't leave the pit wall until your car is within 1 pit box of the your pit box. Also unlike in F1 etc as long as you aren't exceeding the speed limit you can race on pit road there is no requirement for you to make sure that your path is clear before being released
