Here are links to some of the routers in my round up here. Basically I take a tablet PC and do signal checks at various points in my house and on my property, then I compare the readings for you guys at the end.

those wireless g netgears are awesome. i have one that has been going 24-7 for almost three years and it hasnt dropped performance once. the problem with them is that if you are pulling multiple signals with a lot of information your modem might switch channels and the router doesnt follow the modem so you loose connection.

Excellent work! Note: 5ghz give you less distance. Wireless technology hasn't changed much. The only true way to get more distance is MORE POWER but the law limits that. You don't want to blast that much power in your home, its not too healthy. Remember cordless home phones? 900mhz, then 1ghz, then 2.4, and now 5ghz!! It was only a small improvement each time. In the end you just stayed near the base. Solution: Lay one cable and have 2 wireless access points in the house.

Linus, do you think the orientation of the router helped as well? I would be interested in how the Newer Netgear N900/WNDR4500 fares in this comparison as well compared to the others since it sits up vertically compared to the Cisco E4200 router.

Theres alot more to comparing routers then just signal strength. Higher connections rates = higher spartial streams = lower signal levels. Also there are different compatibilities between your tablet's wireless antenna and the wireless signal on the 1st and 2nd layers. Just Google the Intel N adapter issues and you will see what I mean. I know it wasn't meant as scientific though, so still thumbs up. I was a fan of the DGL-4300 until I moved to dd-wrt.

So, I'm in a condo and my Router is in my kitchen on top of the cupboards, My main computer is in the master bedroom which is in the next room... although the computer is just on the other side of the wall... my PS3 is in the same master bedroom... my Xbox360 is in the living room about 15 ft. away, My Laptop is setup in the dining room about 7 ft. away... and I use my Iphone and Tablet through out the condo... Which Router would you recommend for the best over all connection?

the point of multiple antennas is for MIMO (multiple input multiple output) which is a way of increasing data speeds in wireless networks it has nothing to do with increasing there range. also i believe its normal for 5ghz bands to have a shorter range than 2.4ghz bands although they do have a better bit rate. i personally have a netgear n750 dual band and it outperforms any other router i have ever used.

linus, you should think about maybe installing dd-wrt or tomato firmwares on some of these routers and then trying again, i seemed to get dramatically more stable performance once i install these on routers.

D-Link has 3 antenna routers to, why not to try also Xtreme N Router and Xtreme N Gaming Router? In addition trying at least one 3rd party antenna and seeing is it worth it.

Linux, I have a D-link DIr-2350-0-9846 with a dual band bank. I have a small dog that runs a lot in the back yard. My neighbors play loud music at night. My computer has 2 gig memory. I once owned a 386 computer when I was a kid. My wife yells at me a lot. Linux what router would you recommend for my room?

@samw9345 I advise you to take a second look ..In todays market the 5gen airport extreme out performs many of your favorite brands. Hell, i still have the 2nd gen airport extreme and im using it as a range extender(no 3rd party software required) and its still getting firmware updates after what...4 years since its been released, cant say that about the other guys.

You should have had them on the table the whole time. I have E4200 and for a week I had it under my desk getting horrible range and speed. Put it on my desk and got range of about 200+ Feet and about a 25Mbps connect speed there.

interesting how signal strength does not always mean the best data rate of transfer so a G router could have high signal strength as compared to a N router have a lower signal strength but the N despite having the lower signal strength would still be faster a pushing the data wireless

shouldve have a netgear wndr4500 n900 in that line up. at only $20-$30 more its suppose to give a much better range with six internal antennas. I set one up recently for a friend but wasn't able to test out its user feasible range.
