I guess there are still points which can be investigated , radio impairment impact with RIS, limited channel information from RIS and power allocation if certain beam/layer with and w.o RIS beamforming gain in MU MIMO scenario for example.

Indeed! This research is in its infancy.

Thank you! I was having a hard time trying to understand this new thing. This Q&A format is superb! I have one question, however: Specifically, what materials are actually used (or envisaged) for building such surfaces (e.g. Graphene)? Sorry if I missed something. Also, are you considering talking about the role of quantum computing in communication systems?

Graphene is indeed one of the envisioned materials. I recommend the following paper for more details on implementation concepts: "Toward intelligent metasurfaces: The progress from globally tunable metasurfaces to software-defined metasurfaces with an embedded network of controllers". And thank you for the suggested topic, we will write it down.

Good work!! Real-time algorithms that can be implemented in IRS-assisted systems or how Deep Learning can be utilized ih these systems would be an interesting topic.

How deep learning can help in IRS systems is discussed in this new video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIPaonaGndWoZtU

This is interesting topic in wireless communication. However it requires still a lot of basic research and practical proves. I don't like this idea so much because it somehow reduces the main benefit of wireless communication. The main benefit of wireless communication is that we don't need to build the channel like in cable/fiber technology. This reflective surface is the element of constructing the better radio channel which currently is made by nature or people and nobody cares if this is good or bad for EM propagation. The wireless communication technology takes care how to work with that difficult radio propagation conditions. We have so many problems now with base stations deployment so adding new element for deployment could be not practical and cost effective.

These are good points. My impression is that people who have a positive view towards the technology are saying that "RIS should be viewed as a supplement to conventional technology; instead of putting up more base stations to improve the coverage, you can put up RIS since these are cheaper and require less energy." While people who have a negative view towards the technology are saying "If you anyway are going to spend time and resources on putting up new equipment, then a base station or relay is more cost-efficient and makes the network easier to operate."
