Does anyone know how to put your ground wires together , some of these videos are not the way it should be done, it is wrong . You push your grounds to the back of the box first then you put the grounds together at the front of box then put a inch and a half twist then determine how many grounds you need then crimp wires. If you twist your wires all the way up in the box you have done it wrong , easier to troubleshoot, so please do not twist all the way in your box. This is OWL okc

Good film. I have a bathroom with one overhead fixture that contains 3 functions: a light, an exhaust fan, and a heat fan blowing in. There are only 2 switches and each switch is hooked to the light plus either an exhaust fan or a heat blowing in fan. I want an option to have light on only. I figure I must go to the attic and find a wire that goes to light and remove the other wire.

Great video. I ran the extra line to add a shower fan/light combo to an existing vanity supply line. The wiring worked perfect. BUT then I tried adding a dimmer switch to my vanity. Now it does not work like I need it to. When I Turn on all three switches and increase the intensity of the vanity light with the dimmer switch, my shower fan slows and shower light dims. I understand why (all of my white lines are tied together), but cannot figure a solution without running a completely separate line. Any solution?

Nice video! With everything else being identical to your configuration, would there be any issue running two 12/2 wires from the switch box to the light/fan combo instead of one 12/3 wire?

Not really, just that you would have to run two wires instead of using one 3 wire.

for the pliers that you use to form the pigtails of the wire and to twist the wires together... are they special pliers for electrical wires, or can I used any type of plier that kinda looks likes yours. are there specific pliers to handle wires with so it doesn't hurt the wires, or doesn't really matter? THanks!
@derrich7735 жыл бұрын
If you are not going to do this often then any similar Lineman pliers will work. It does not make sense to waste the money on high end electrical tools unless you plan to do this often.

Your tan ideal connectors can connect up to 3 #10 wires. You're twisting 4 #14 ground wires so you can still use your tan connectors. The red is over-sized. Also why wouldn't you twist the pigtails all at the same time with the other wires? You'll get a neater twist and a much more secure connection.

I got a question. My house is old but is run under 12 gauge wire. So, I'm getting a separate breaker to manage a walking closet, bathroom and a small TV room, I'm gonna have outlets in all three rooms as well as 5 light fixtures for my vanity light, my shower light, my air vent fan and light, my ceiling fan and lights and two lights in the walking closet. Also, I'm running 10 power outlets with one GFI for my vanity among them. Is that too much load for a 12 gauge wiring? I was planning to use 14-2 gauge wire for my lights, 12-3 for my vent and fan and 12-2 for my power outlets. My question is... Should i run all 12-2 or 14-2? I have plenty 14-2 but I have only 50 feet of 12-2. What worries me is that I'm using 12-3 for the vent and ceiling fan. I should have use 14-3 but I didn't. That is where my problem and doubts are. How to go from a smaller wire to a bigger one? I'm not an electrician but it just make sense not to do it. I have 14-2 for my light but I don't feel confortable. What do you suggest?

Pardon me for being stupid, but why not just leave the Ground wires as they were individually and wire into each designated switch ? Wouldn't it accomplish the same thing with less work than tying all the pig tails into the Ground wires?.. I mean that's what you did basically only by taking all the individual wires and tying them together the adding pig tails and separating them again !?Right?!
@derrich7733 жыл бұрын
All grounds get tied together in a switch box in addition to all neutrals unless you have to jump a neutral.

i just installed an extra switch because my original wiring had 3 loads to 1 switch, turning on every single light in the room which was way over kill. Currently only one of the switches is turning on the load. If i connect the loads to that first switch each load will turn on, but not on their individual switches. I checked the voltage and the first switch is getting ~120v but the other 2 are only getting about 30v. any idea what i am screwing up?

You don't have to ground switches
@jonlynch5 жыл бұрын
Of course you should ground switches! The only time you wouldn't need to is if you're using a metal box that is itself grounded, in which case the switch yoke would come in contact with the box and transitively ground the switch.
