Thank you so much for these straightforward and clear videos! I just moved into a house that has been converted into two apartments and exactly as you described, the phone company refuses to guarantee service to the apartment. I could pay a tech more than my monthly bill to come out, but I"ve got the tools and would rather do it myself. ✌🏿

The quality and professionalism in the video are top-notch, earning an A+. It's advisable to terminate both PR 1 and PR 2, even if you only have one line of service. This ensures that it's ready for dual line services like bonded DSL and reduces the risk of loose PRs coming in contact with PR 1/line 1. Thank you for providing such a great video!

Hello and thank you for the info! I am slowly repairing the aftermath of my kitchen after my contractor abandoned us without finishing. My problem is that I have two commercial cables emerging from my phone jack. I'm assuming I only need to use one set, but is there a way to select which one? Thank you!
@DIYTelecom
@DIYTelecom 4 жыл бұрын
Generally, you only need to wires for residential dialtone. If its a comercial phone cable, there will be 8 wires in there (maybe less). The blue/white twisted pair are the two wires you would normally be concerned about. Also, you mentioned two cables. One probably comes from the telco demarc and the other continues on to other jacks in the house. 😊

Great video. What I was looking for. I just have a question tho.. On my flush mount I have 2 washers on each screw on the back.. so where would I wrap each wire at? At the very bottom touching the the wall mount wires or in the middle of the washers/each washer like layers separate from one another by a washer?? Or does it matter?
@myownplaylist1331
@myownplaylist1331 4 жыл бұрын
Ok, so I am replacing one that the phone company installed, they wrapped the stripped (copper) portion of the wires in between the two washers. I'm replacing it with a new flush-mount (a cheaper one) which does not have any washers, just the screw pressed to the connector. So, it doesn't really matter, because all the metal parts are conductors.

We have only 3 pair I can see - green white and green pass through from one side of the cable to the other without being used in the outlet, and then blue/blue white, and orange/ orange white are connected from both sides to the jack in the kitchen, which is a pretty old jack - it looks like it must be wired in series with other outlets in the home, so it passes through for the 2 pairs which are used, and not sure about the green white / green which passes through without being used, and if there is a brown white / brown, it must be snipped off on both sides, as I can't see it in there? any thoughts? thanks for the great video.

One connected to a VoIP tell,one to a cap tel phone and one to a printer. I would like to add a two port biscuit jack. Can I run wire from my existing jack to the two port new biscuit jack, that would give me three ports to plug in my devices opposed to utilizing a three port splitter? Thank You

Looks easy enough. Question. My internet went out so I checked my phone that's also connected to same jack and there was no dialtone. I checked a different jack in the house and it was the same thing. Absolutely nothing. But if you plug in a phone outside to nid box there's a dialtone. Can one bad jack effect all other jacks so none have a dialtone?

So “phone wire” is 24gauge solid copper wire. Most suitable for in-wall wiring. Plus it binds well to the screw posts in the phone jacks. “Line Cord” is a very fine, stranded copper wiring. (Like thinner than human hair). It’s horrible for making connections to jacks. The line cords are usually ore-made in the factory to put the modular ends on them. Thanks for the question. 😃

@DIYTelecom

Deborah, two options: 1. The feed (phone power) comes into a separate box, usually outside called Demark. Look for something with like the phone company logo on it. 2. Phone power usually won’t bite you unless the phone rings. So, if you have another phone on that same circuit, you can just take it off the hook while you work.

Hi, so I just bought a old house from 60s, has no phone jacks or not even a network interface device this house is for my mom, she is a security freak kinda and we are changing baseboards because super ugly I think it even has abscesses (I apologize my wrong spelling I’m a in a hurry for my night shift) so basically during the baseboards open we are going to add a Honeywell hardwired alarm system, cable TV jacks and internet and phone jacks, now my question is could I buy cat5e or cat5 or cat3 cable expose copper, and wire into her phone jacks that we will buy. But can I just put a normal rj11 end on the cat5e, cat5 or cat3 cable? Also she has a optimum modem and she has a really old western electric wall rotary ohone, I guess I would be able to just slide the phone down the jack. I would like to just buy real phone cable like, cat5e or cat5. Or cat3 cable and just wire that into phone jack and do rj11 end so she can plug into opitum modem, then I guess I’ll get a three port phoen splitter since she has three bedrooms this way she can use her old western electric touch tone phone.

Great video. I have a question for you, I have one biscuit jack in my house that continually keeps going bad within a year or two. I just did a continuity test on the posts and all went to 1 except yellow which went to a 2 from screw post to the wire where the terminal is. From post to the end of the wire sticking out the outside of the terminal I don't think the continuity fell below 17 at best.. most of the time in the 100s with multimeter. Do you know what would cause this?
@DIYTelecom

First thing that popped into my head when I read this is “bad splice somewhere”. Do you notice static on the line (when it’s working)? When I see that kind of symptom as you describe that’s my first suspicion. Are there any other juncture locations (other wall jacks) where the cable may have been tapped? If so, I would be inspecting those for potentially sub-par connections.

Hi Sylvester. Thanks for watching. I have another YT channel all about network and data. There’s a video over there called “connect cat6 cable to jack”. That should give you what you need. KZbin.com/NetworkAdvisor

Does anybody have a clue what the 8 wire colors and terminal locations are for 4 phone lines for going from 8 wire OLD color code to the NEW 4 pair color code??? I know the last four old colors are white blue grey and brown but, I can’t find any diagrams for proper termination of the old colors on the new green & white/green and brown & white/brown colors??? From what I’m told its 8 wire USOC color code converted to new 4 twisted pair color code using USOC pin out. My old house has 8 wire but the terminals aren’t marked and only 4 are used right now but, I’d like to use all 8 wired correctly. I know only this so far! Line 1: ring: old red to new blue, tip: old green to new blue/white Line 2: tip: old black to new orange/white, ring: old yellow to new orange Line 3: tip: old ????? to new green/white, ring: old ????? to new green Line 4: tip: old ????? to new brown/white, ring: old ????? to new brown

Thank you very much for your videos I learned a lot. My question is what would be the best and neatest way for me to terminate my phone lines going to my house? Its a older home with a crawl space so running wire isn't that difficult. I will be using cat5e wire. I want it to look clean and easy to work on if a problem comes up in the future. Again thank you very much and happy holidays.

Yes, the wires do have electric current on them if they are connected to the phone company. Do I touch them with my hands? Yes. But I definitely avoid any kind of wet contact which dramatically increases the conductivity of my skin. Also, if the phone happens to ring while working with the wires, the voltage jumps up and you will feel that! 😳
