CISS #2 Epson L210 Setup

We just completed a huge test comparing the performance of CISS-equipped inkjet printers to that of common inkjet printers. What is CISS? Continuous Ink Supply Printers have large external ink tanks that can be refilled with bottled ink. The advantages are low Cost Per Page but the disadvantages that we discovered in our comprehensive examination are considerable.
Project CISS involved the testing of nine printers overall, two with OEM CISS and four with and without the two types of CISS add-on kits: 1) "pre-fitted" with ink cartridges included; and 2) "DIY" where you supply the ink cartridges. The end result was a 64-page test report and a series of 11 videos. Upon powering up, wait till Power LED stops blinking then press ink button for 3 seconds and you should see Power and Ink LED will Flash alternately. Charging is done when Power LED and Ink LED stops blinking. Only Power LED should be on by that time. Start printing...

Thanks Ramon. As Ramon says, Epson provides a priming function for its CISS-equipped printers. The CISS kits were another story altogether and you had to use a syringe and a snap-on adapter in order to prime them. Lighthing Ryko If the LEDs will not stop blinking, make sure that the transport latch is not turned on. Then power the system down and up and try the priming process once again.

You are quite welcome James and we are gratified that you found the video useful. On another note, ink is so cheap and plentiful that you can set your printing defaults to High Quality. However, since the ink is dye-based, do not let your prints get wet.

I use a hypodermic meat or barbecue needle injector for transferring the ink from the bottles to the printer. It seems to be less messy that way ..then rinse the injector with clear water ,VERY well between using it for the other ink colors..

The CISS really looks like an afterthought. It should be properly integrated into the case, not hanging off the side. The ink entry ports should be shaped so you just take a normal lid off the ink bottle and screw the bottle into the port, the foil being pierced at the same time. The bottle could be left in place until it was empty. It's almost as if Epson doesn't want to encourage CISS.

Amy UNTOLD I have after-market CISS systems for two printers. Neither needs to have the tanks flipped for filling. The systems could still be modular, and used across multiple printer designs, and still be better integrated into the case.

Great video Terry, I have a question, don´t know if you have the answer, what happens if during the ink charge that lasts 20 minutes i have an electricity cut? starts the process from zero? it resumes?

Marica Korolija It uses dye-based ink and there is pigment-based ink available from third parties in China. That said, I am not sure about the viability and availability of dye-sub inks.

A printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life. Please contact Epson Support. How can I troubleshoot the Epson L120 if this is the prompt message?

Znerbiah Nicolas You need to replace the collection unit. It's fairly easy to do but I am not sure that you can buy them and may have to send the printer to Epson. Our testing showed that this message is based on the number of cleanings and not on the volume of ink therein. There's also a third-party counter reset program for sale online.

Znerbiah Nicolas Whatever you do, you need to use third-party software to reset the service counter. It is available online for ~$10. Also, you can flip the unit over, remove some screws, take out the ink collection unit and check to see if the diaper is completely saturated. I am not sure what to do if it is, but be careful with the drainage tube when you reassemble it.

+Terry Wirth I disconnected the hose leading into the waste ink reservoir, and attached it to a Printer Potty. This is a ready made kit for certain printers. You could easily make your own, but I liked having it as a complete kit. The SSC software utility is available for free. People are being ripped off when they pay for this! If it doesn't explicitly support a particular printer, it may still work by selecting a similar model. At least, that has been my experience. My Canon can easily be dismantled to clean the absorbent sponges, and has a button combination to reset the ink counter.
