You’re 100% correct that this is a segmented speed run. TAS generally is like straight up using a tool to do specific timed inputs which is why they can chain 70 nose bugs together. But if you use a tool for save states or something in order to save your progress until you get a better run on that section, that just seems like segmented to me. And the best part is that WOW GUYS segmented runs CAN still be cool. You don’t gotta cheat to get fame, just innovate like Wirtual and Schmaniol and be the first people to put together a segmented run showing the current theoretical human limit. Cheaters never win, but innovators can segment their runs and still be considered godly because they’re on the cusp of possibility. :)
@OCinneideАй бұрын
The only reason runs like this don't get more praise is because they are brute forced and EASILY cheated. It could turn out that either of these guys actually used tools to get the run or cheated extra grip or cleaned their tyres etc. Once you add some programs it's impossible to say they didn't add anything else and so people will never view it as as cool as normal runs.
@OCinneideАй бұрын
And you can see it by Wirtual's reaction as well, when he completed DD2 he was crying, his heart was pounding etc. Here he is just laughing.
@animowany111Ай бұрын
@@OCinneide These runs are still extremely impressive, but not in the way a normal godly WR would be impressive. A normal run shows the runner's skill. A good segmented run shows the ceiling of humanly achievable play. A TAS shows the absolute limits of the game itself. They are all different. There's also a somewhat uncommon category of runs called human theory TAS, where TAS tools are used to create a run, but only 'humanly doable' strategies are used - just executed perfectly cleanly. These, when they exist, are used by speedrunners to compare to their own runs, to prioritize which sections to work on the most, and which ones have the most potential for timesave.

@alphahawk325Ай бұрын
You may be right that it’s more common but even more common than that is the term segmented
@DreadKyllerАй бұрын
@@gwentarinokripperinolkjdsf683 Very few communities call things like this a human viable TAS. TAS by definition is Tool-Assisted Speedrun, that's what it stands for. Breaking the run down into multiple segments, running each segment normally until you get a good run of that segment, and then stitching those runs together does not use sure tools in almost all cases, that's why TAS and Segmented speedruns are in most communities entirely separate categories. Notice how the ends and starts of each segment don't line perfectly up with each other, this is because this isn't a single run, the clips of these segments are literally spliced together, it's not like they recorded an actual stream of inputs and played it to recreate the exact endpoint to continue from for the attempts. BTT is a common phrase for this type of run, Segmented Run is also extremely popular, but it's not that common to hear it called a Human-Viable TAS. Maybe it's more common in the communities you participate in, but I don't see it being "the more common name" overall.
@TrueChaoSclxАй бұрын

I'm an academic and my job is to design algorithms/schemes/codes and analyze their performances. But this is usually not enough. You also need to derive a lower bound that serves as an impossibility result. It says "no matter how smart you are, you can't beat this". If your design is close to or equal to the theoretical limit, then it means you did well. What Wirtual and Schmaniol did is something similar. It's not a theoretical limit in the strict sense. But with high probability, this lower bound cannot be beaten by humans. Sometimes we also mix the algorithms like they do here (x% of time use Algo 1, 100-x% of time use Algo 2). This can further improve what is achievable.

It's been a long time since I've been amazed watching footage of this game. Truly astounding and I'm only 2 minutes into the run.
