Wisconsin Public Land Grouse Hunting with a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Pup

In this video I take Sasha on her second trip bird hunting for Ruffed Grouse in Central Wisconsin on public land. Sasha is only 7 months old, and I think she did great, leave comments and share your thoughts and advice.

How did Sasha do for her second grouse hunt?

I thought she did a great job for her second hunt. She worked, she had fun, and she had no problem with the gunshot. Its her puppy season, she can do no wrong.

Come out to eastern Oregon. We have tons of quail, along with pheasants and chukars, and even grouse up in the mountains. Your little gal would have a blast.

Curious why you leave a leash on her to drag around? Is there a purpose to that?

At that point we were still working on steadiness and forced fetch, so that rope (which is tangle free) allows me to maintain control of her when we get on birds for that purpose. Many have expressed concern that the rope could get tangled and she could get hurt, but it hasn't happened. This year we will work with her without the rope, as she is improving in steadiness and fetch.

Did you introduce her to gunfire before taking her hunting?

No, I didn't. A well-trained bird dog with a strong prey drive doesn't need it, they are too focused on the bird to be distracted by gunfire. Sasha is no exception, my 4th bird dog and she's never flinched at a gunshot.

“Ground swatting” Is a good way to lose your favorite hunting dog. Definitely would discourage when hunting in a group.
