Catholicism and Confucianism famously encountered each other when Jesuit missionaries entered China in the 16th century. But how did these Jesuit missionaries engage Confucianism and, more pressingly, translate core concepts of Confucianism such as wisdom or what it means to be a sage? To what extent can ideas about the life of wisdom "transfer" from one religious domain to another, particularly in contexts where multiple conceptions and options of translation are possible?
Dr. Xueying Wang sits down to discuss these topics here.
