Von Everic wasn't a sociopath with a heart of stone, he received a heart of stone as a side effect of wishing to, "Live everyday as though it's the last." He loved his wife and was willing to sell his soul for her, he also loved his brother deeply. They were criminals and rapscallions, but Ol'geird wanted to leave that behind and join his wife. The heart of stone, being unable to love, being unable to feel, wasn't what Ol'Geird had to begin with, it was his curse and the beginning of his downfall. And even when he had it, he remembered enough of himself, how he once loved, to go to great lengths to undo the curse and reverse it's effects. The only humanity we see in Ol'Geird is a memory of all the humanity he lost.

What I love most about Gaunter’s portrayal is how incredibly grounded he is. The man dresses up like a lowly merchant, his physical appearence is not that different from any other NPC in the world at first glance and talks in a pretty normal manner compared to most characters in the series, even though he’s arguably the most powerful entity there is. His cunning deception is one of his greatest strengths and it helps him to manipulate his victims. Best part is he probably doesn’t have to do any of that given his powers, he just fancies toying with lesser creatures and that is undoubtedly malicious

i loved this too! if you notice, he can CLEARLY teleport and manifest wherever he pleases, yet he makes the deliberate decision to WALK often. even 'lesser' demons or entities like the dog and cat teleport around more often then not but Gaunter doesn't

I honestly don't think it's a question of his abilities. He seems more or less beyond concepts like power. For the most part, he's merely putting on a show for those that he chooses to interact with. It's more like he's taking it easy for the sake of his own amusement. Even when he is beaten, it's still his own game. He even shows it with the way he traps the guy into standing on the moon. That's not even twisting words, that's a depiction of a crescent moon. It's not "The Moon". As established by the guy's own words, if he does not know it exists, the moon is a singular thing in the sky. He could have had kids draw a picture of the moon in the dirt and he would still profess that is was good enough. But at the end of the day, he's still just looking for amusement. Which is the most likely reason he got Geralt involved. A likely candidate to give a him a chance at losing. If it's always a certainty that he comes out on top, then what is the point? I think they make out the conjunction of spheres as what drew his attention in the first place. Or he could have caused it, but he seems more like an entity that searches for excitement and goes where the action is. But ultimately, I guess they have to leave him a mystery. Otherwise, he overshadows anything, or any being, in the Witcher universe. The witches in the swamp seem similar to him in their ways, using folklore, marks of ownership, and they put on a show to frighten people. But they are utterly pathetic compared to Gaunter and his whims. He doesn't clap to stop time, he stops time and claps to make you think there was some earthly cause to the effect.

People talk about Gaunter stopping time, but if you pay close attention to the scene in the inn, you can actually see the flames are still burning naturally in the fireplace (the shifting and changing pattern of the shadows on the walls) meaning he didn't stop time, he merely froze the living creatures in the inn in their place.

One thing about Gaunter O'Dimm that's important to remember, is that he's the only character in the entire Witcher series that appears to be fully aware of us. He deliberately makes eye contact with the camera several times to ensure we know he sees us. Truly amazing.

The whole story is rooted deeply in eastern european folklore, where it's always the devil: you can defeat him if you know his name or if you beat him ath his game, making pacts all the time, it collects souls etc... So I'd say it's more evil than good.

He's up there with the best character ever created in a video game CD could not have wrote his character any better. The voice actor absolutely sold it also. You really feel like it's the Devil. Also, one thing worth mentioning, in the majority of the cutscenes with Master Mirror, someone almost always says "devil" on the ship the guy next to you in the cell said it, in the bar the guy who's soup he spiked also said "what the devil?" Hi Wisefish man, I wanna to add a little thing to Master Mirror's final riddle in Heart of Stone. The mysterious Cat and Dog in von Everec's Manor told geralt to "seek salvation in the mirror (or glass) that cannot be broken". I think that's how Geralt solved that riddle. Great video as always.

Going on the devil/evil incarnate/fallen higher being motifs found in his character, if he's a former higher dimensional entity who found itself bound in a fourth-dimensional prison due to a fall-from-grace scenario (which, even if all of 3D space and its 4D timeline were relatively expansive to us, it would most definitely be like a prison to something that was originally accustomed to the freedom of going to and from greater realms beyond spacetime), then his character makes perfect sense. He doesn't have the ability to kill unless someone gives him permission to via vices. I think that even goes to characters like the drunk that he "spoons" to death--the drunk has already essentially traded his better life to be a sot and he's already in the company of O'Dimm, despite not knowing to the full extent of what O'Dimm truly is. He found himself in the wrong company due to his choices. As a 4D entity, O'Dimm is stuck in a place where it can only watch and wait for his quarry to slip up. It is precisely what demons are implied to be.

Just rewatched this and even with many things i cant remember from the game, i had a thought. Many people point out, how Gaunter is very polite to Shani and mostly rude to his contracts. He truly just mirrors his counterparts in every interaction. Rude and cold to Olgierd, direct and determined to Geralt, puzzling and scheming for the professor. And just so, every contract/wish fulfillment is targeted at his potential victim, which traps them specifically: -The professor is trapped in his fear of Gaunter and the interest about his true nature. He wanted to be safe against Gaunter's schemes, who would have had no influence without this contract or his interest over him. (I suspect he could have left the circle at any time and would have been fine.) -Olgierd wanted an easy solution for all his problems. But this easy way out took every joy out of him(such a classic trope btw.). And after that, he just tried again and again to drown himself in the simplest and easiest pleasures. Oh and couldn't be honest with his brother, even after his death. No real effort for his wishes and dreams. You know what i mean. -Geralt on the other hand works hard for his goals and doesn't loose his wit in dangerous times. A strong and healthy "soul" is of no interest to Gaunter O'Dimm(this is also true for Shani and maybe even for the old woman at the wedding). But since he needs Geralt for his contract with Olgierd, he arranges for the situation where Geralt has to owe him a favour. But even with his help, Geralt has to work for his freedom, because thats just how he is. The true test for Geralt in his contract is about his morality, where he has to decide who the bigger monster is. Olgierd or Gaunter O'Dimm. This is btw. a really good RP element. If you think that Olgierd is the bigger monster you just let Gaunter take his soul. And vice versa. Just a thought, but maybe the man who won his soul back from Gaunter didn't outwit him. Maybe the drawbacks of his fulfilled wish gave him an insight about his problems so he could nurture his "soul" to a point where Gaunter had no more interest in it. One definite lesson is, that there are no shortcuts for problems.

I know Blood & Wine is impressive, beautiful, practically another game entirely. For me though, Heart of Stone is peak Witcher 3. Its the best storyline, the best characters, and has the sharpest dialogue. Gaunter is one of my favorite villains ever, and my favorite depiction of the devil, all time. Every scene with Olgierd is fantastic. He seems cool at first, then you fear him, then you hate him, then you feel sad for him, and eventually you pity him. Its so good. Even Shani is my favorite. I think its my favorite DLC for any game, ever.

The assertion that he is evil clashes with the fact that he never lies or cheats. The only time he ever seems to act disproportionately is when he sticks the spoon in the drunk's eye, and his statement "That's the last time you interrupt me." heavily implies that more happened than we see. He likes Shani and even gives Geralt free advice to win her over. Master Mirror only appears evil when someone evil is looking at him.

He tells you a lot of half truths, and manipualtes the Ofieri into going to the tunnels for the prince at the exact time you go to slay him. When you talk to the other guy at the boat, he tells you that someone who speaks common (english) recriuted him to show the Ofieris around the tunnel to find the prince (and that that person is on the boat). And Gaunter is the only one along with the mage speaking english. My theory is that Gaunter recriuted the guide to show the ofieris where the prince is at the time you went to see olgierd and that is why they arrives as soon as you killed the prince and that is why you have to accept gaunter's offer. He was manipulating you from the get go

Most accurate depiction of Satan in any game I have ever played. Diablo from his series, and Raphael from Baldur's Gate 3 have *nothing* on Gaunter. The scene where you're in his mirror dimension for the riddle and Geralt says "And if I lose?" as Geralt looks over the ledge to an infinite dark abyss underneath, no fire and brimstone, no souls writhing in agony, just a swirling vortex and a black void beneath and you hear Gaunter laugh; *"Hahaha! Then the three of us will go for a wild ride!"* Legit goosebumps. For some reason reminds me of that super fucked up Willy Wonka tunnel scene "There's no earthly way of knowing! What direction we are going!"

I personally believe he's some sort of eldrich god. Something like Nyarlathotep or the Great Ones from Bloodborne, only in human form. You learn a lot more about him from texts in the standalone Gwent game, but I believe that he does what he does not because he is evil, but because he is not human and so does not have a human's sense of morality. He merely nudges people and reflects them simply to sate his curiosity of what will happen. Truly neutral in the grand scheme of things, but horrifyingly powerful, much like how an insect might view a human. I believe he puts the restrictions he explains to Geralt on himself merely as a way to avoid getting bored. He is all-powerful, uncaring, and unknowable, not because he's the devil or evil incarnate, but simply because he is so completely and utterly above us, and may very well be of a nature so alien we could never hope to understand him beyond what he tells us. i think he works better as he is, i would prefer him have more presence in the next game but i wouldn't want him to actually be an enemy. rather a person who influences key parts of the story and larger world. he did say if he ever needs help again he'll call on a witcher, and while they're a dying order, in the best and probably canon ending, Ciri becomes her own version of a Witcher

We don't know that he can control everything in the universe. His power over time may be isolated to a localized area. He may only be able to manipulate time on earth or even only in one place on earth. His penchant for deception while at the same time refusing to violate his oaths may be indicative of a limitation. He may himself be the pawn of a being or beings greater and more powerful than himself who force him to operate within certain, unbreakable parameters. We assume that he keeps his oaths simply because it's more fun for him to do so, but he has proven to be incredibly deceptive, so we really have no justification for assuming such things. It might also be that he is a spirit of some future age either created or released upon the earth by some massive, future catastrophe. Or he could be a very powerful mage from some future time where mankind has blended technology with magic to produce exceptionally powerful results. For example, he could be a future mage who tapped into some sort of quantum fluctuation where he now finds himself able to travel forwards and backwards in time. We just don't know. We aren't given enough information. All our knowledge about him is just guesswork at best.

I know what he is. Guanter o dimm or master mirror or man of glass is from mirror on the wall who grant the evil queen wishes and answer her question (who is the fairest of them all). Guanter riddle game to challenged Geralt give you clues. I thought Guanter is Rumble Stilskin or genie and he is not god, not soothsayer, not demon. Guanter is an awesome creature in the witcher world.

In the Witcher ending when you come across the dwarfs who stole your boat on the Isle of Mists, there’s some dialogue in which the dwarves tell Geralt the merchant who bought their stolen golden chalice was a Master Mirrory. Why O’Dimm is interested in their golden chalice or putting coin in the scheming dwarves pockets I’ll never know. Clearly the man gets off on people’s suffering. Gaunter banishing Vlodimir was quite haunting, considering my Geralt told O’Dimm he didn’t have to hurt Vlodimir and he just responded. “I know, but I could.” Along with O’Dimm spending the entire party trying to demean and demoralise said dead man. Like, where does he get off? Get a life, O’Dimm.

Finally someone who agrees on my interpretation on him. There's no known gods or devils in this world. Only conjunction of spheres brought together two worlds, humans and world of world of magic and monsters, even immortal and always existing ones (like higher vampires). Why would CDPR bring the most powerful of beings in this world, if they are not in the books? As you said, this guy is probably a higher demon or something, with powers of old folktales from middle ages in Polish areas. TLDR: As I said, an immortal creature like higher vampires. Most likely higher demon or similar.

As Slavic I would say Gaunter is inspired by typical slavic folklore fairytales, where hero is dealing with "čert" (in czech). Hero is trying to reverse some pact with čert, because he traded his soul for wealth etc. and now he is trying to save himself. Čert can be translated as devil or krampus in german which is more close in appearances i would say. Čert as a evil creature dates back to pagan times and then shift to christianity as a hell dweller under Lucifer or whatever is your name for "christian" devil.

Personally i think Gaunter O'Dimm is an incredibly powerful warlock who likely got trapped in this dimension during the conjuction of the spheres. Gonna assume he's from a magical order much much higher than what humans and elves could attain.

I'll be honest, I threw Olgir to Gaunter. For whatever you can say about him, Gaunter always honors his contracts. And pissing of something like him seems like a fast way to get a fate worse then death.

You say he’s evil, but I don’t know if that’s true. Rather, he seems more to be “A thing that embodies what people themselves show him.” The Professor expected a being of pure evil, and to be tricked and die, and exactly that occurs. Olthir is a callous man who takes for granted what he has and thus he’s punished, his wickedness magnified and turned against him, destroying him and his dreams in the cruelest of ways. Geralt is a morally complicated but ultimately good man and Gaunter assists him, saves his life, and ultimately gives him a reward, including earnest advice on how to save Ciri, despite not really being compelled to. He never expresses interest in Geralt’s soul, and is rather amiable about the whole affair. He only acts like an enemy if Geralt confronts him like one. Treats him like one. No. I think Gaunter O’Dimm is far more terrifying then just “Pure Evil”. Pure evil seeks to do nothing but harm. I think Gaunter, far more chillingly, thinks he’s doing the right thing. He can hate and torment his prizes til the stars burn out because he’s certain, in the depths of his soul, that they truly deserve it.
