And says I want my friend back is oh so wholesome.....not really because they know nothing about each other at all and 15 years or more have passed since they were even in the same room. To be fair, Disney didn't exactly invent the story of Aladdin. They invented Abu and named the princess Jasmine but, the basic story itself was pre-existing. Aladdin is a pretty famous folk tale that's been around for literally 100s of years. In other words, if you were an adult before Disney's original "Aladdin" came out and had a fairly good education... you'd probably heard of the story of Aladdin before (for goodness sake, I remember I'd heard of Aladdin before and I was only 6 years old). "The Wish Dragon" is obviously a modern-day adaptation of Aladdin but, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's, actually, a bit surprising that there haven't been more film adaptations of this particular folktale set in the modern-day (the only other one I can think of is "Kazaam"). It's definitely the first one set in Shanghai/China, which is kinda cool since the original folktale was said to be set in China (most versions just choose to set it around Arabia to make it less confusing, since it is a Middle Eastern folktale). If I were the filmmakers, I'd be a lot more concerned about this being compared to "Raya", considering it's 2 stories set around a kid and an Eastern-style dragon coming out very close together...

i just watched the chinese dub of this, and i really like it! Cant wait for the english version on netflix. And btw to all those who are saying it’s an aladdin knockoff, first of all: The original story was set in CHINA, so yeah this makes more sense. Second: i swear, this version of the “genie” is far more pessimistic and less cheerful. He’s nothing like the robin williams genie. However, he is entertaining in his own way. And (minor spoiler) his backstory is just heartbreaking Third: just watch the whole movie until the end. You will witness character arcs being fulfilled and endings be satisfied. Trust me. I’ve seen it. Give this movie a chance.

I’ll make a couple of points about their relationship 1) he goes through a lot of effort to impress her 2) in the scene when they’re in the gift room, they look into each other’s eyes (again you don’t look at your “friends” like that) 3) in that same scene, after Li Na’s dad sets her up on a date with “Dan” . Din asks her “so, um, would you really like to-“ but Li Na replies with an emphatic “YES. Yeah. [chuckles]” before he could finish his sentence, implying that she’s interested in him in a romantic sense 4) in the alley scene after they use the dragon to fly. Din catches Li Na’s punch & they just stare each other (again these are nuances that show romantic connection, if you can’t see that then idk what to tell you ) 5) when they’re on Din’s rooftop, he hands her his jacket they look away, to shy to make eye contact (this isn’t something you do in a platonic relationship) they then end up doing they’re pinky promise ending it with both staring into each other’s eyes for a good period of time before they get interrupted by the bright billboard . Din exclaiming, “it doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing, though “ and she LITERALLY BLUSHES 6) after that, Din finally asks her “what do you say we go for a real date?” If you want to say thats it’s just strictly platonic, I’d suggest rewatching the movie. You can be best friends and still have feelings for each other.

This movie is actually great! I'd give it a 75/100. The were plenty of themes: wealth inequality, family expectations vs. self-actualization, wealth vs. happiness, selfishness vs. altruism. I think it's a rare story where a clash of ideals ends with the antagonist healing the wavering ideals of the protagonist. Off the top of my head, I can only recall this happening between Rey and Kylo Ren, or Luke and Darth Vader. What I disliked about the movie where the action sequences and animations. I think a high budget 3D animation made by Columbia, Sony, Tencent and etc. should not have static background characters or 2D backgrounds.

Plot is basically Aladdin set in the modern world of China, or something Asian-based that does not exist. Boy finds a magical item that holds a great and powerful genie, but it's a dragon this time, befriends it, uses his first two wishes for his benefit, hijinks soon occur when the villain threatens our young protagonist, and the ending he uses his last wish to free the dragon, and the boy and his love interest start a newfound relationship, THE END.

Beyond the obvious Aladdin comparisons, I’m most disappointed that the dragon kite they played with as kids looks exactly like the wish dragon. Couldn’t it have at least been a different color than the actual wish dragon? They have to fall into an over used trope? Sigh. Looks like a fun watch, even if it is Chinese Aladdin. 😁

It comes really close to Aladdin and even deals with some of the same issues. That said it is a great watch. I swear that kid reminded me so much of the Brother in Big Hero 6. That is what this is really. A mix between Big Hero 6 and Aladdin,and a tad of Mulan. Doing it's own thing. Sometimes it tries a bit to much but the humor is awesome. A must see regardless.

Don't make me start with the scene that the dragon become small and said he's trap for thousand years 😒. That is Aladdin script. I want to slap people who said the story was also not originally Disney's. Coz it's not just the story but down to the script and the jokes 🤦‍♀️
