You can put an charge on non-rechargeables. As long as they have not leaked. Stored batteries are sometimes restored to (almost) brand new capacity by a short charge. It seems to "wake up" the chemistry. Still, you are better off storing lipo replacements. Low self discharge, wont ever leak, can be rechaged hundreds or thousands of times while retaining at least half capacity. They make these very nifty charging cables that attach to the ends of tbe batteries via magnets, and automatically adjust to the correct polarity and voltage.

the reason you should never recharge disposable batteries even if their chemistry would allow it is the same reason why built as rechargeable batteries have a limited number of cycles. eventually, there will be a internal short (likely a not so pleasant failure mode depending on battery type). whats more is due to the fact that almost nobody bothers to test this and the inherent inconsistency its anyone's guess how many times you can get away with it.
