Nick learned a trick about fixing radiant wire once the tile is installed without having to pull up the entire floor at the Schluter Systems booth at IBS.

My daughter and I did a DIY update of her 1947 rancher back in 2004. We pulled out the old cracked and broken bathroom floor tile and installed Schluter over the original subfloor. Then installed new tile. It was our first ever tile job and turned out perfectly. When she sold the house 14 yrs later the tile was still perfect.

Thanks Schluter for taking your time with this, greatly shows how your company is. Very professional. And to Builders great video, not even through it yet, but so informative and great production and many questions. You would almost say this was scripted because how well you 2 conversed. Schluter needs to sell premade custom shower enclosures so you can give them the measurements and it is less likely to leak so you don't have to trust your installer as much or even better yet - just like Tesla installs roofs, they could have their own division for installs.

I've yeat to see that primer out for sale. Makes so much sense for a bonded underlayment to be primed. Any leveler would be primed to substrate. Why wouldn't Ditra be primed? Glad to see after a couple decades Schluter realizing need for it. Just haven't seen their primer for sale yet.

Great video as always. I am in texas, slab on grade. Do you think using ditra duo without the heating cable would be an adequate thermal break to make the floor more comfortable? We normally do not use ditra or floor heat but it does get cold in north Texas. Thanks!

@NSbuilders you should run a separate cable for the shower. Not just get a longer cable. You can run both cables to 1 thermostat.

Great info. Really loving this channel. When looking to flush out materials does any consideration need to be take into the thinset thickness? Lets say you do a test "dry flush" check and its all flush between ditra/tile and a hardwood floor how much will the thin set come into play during actual installation. How do you account for 2 layers of thinset?

PVA Overcoating, best primer for underlayment, buying purpose built primers are great, if you have the enormous budget... and that is most likely what they are selling to begin with!

You make a good point at the end. I recently witnessed an "installer doing a 12 x 24 tile in a tub surround adhering the tiles onto drywall with mastic. He didn't even know what he was doing wrong nor did the customer. Of course it's just a matter of time before those tiles start falling down. I think every tile layer should be certified by a board before being allowed to do the work.

@markme4

Whats wrong with latex primer ?
@daversj
@daversj 2 жыл бұрын
Latex primer is probably better than nothing in certain situations provided the thinset bites well to it. Bonding agent is probable half as expensive however. It penetrates wood and is specifically designed to grab masonry products. During installation it usually requires two coats and thinset should be applied while the second coat has a little tack, giving you a chemical bond. However, very clean plywood with a modified thinset will typically bond well.

I don't get how you can put a thermostat in a closet and expect it to work correctly. The thermostat senses the surrounding temp, so how can it sense the temp of a floor when it's in a closet?

The marketing for schluter is what keeps it running. In practice, it's not that impressive. Too soft pan and walls that pierces easily and breaks easily. Not to mention its pricy. So schluter have a lot to thank its marketing team for its success.

Tell Andy I spent $1800 on a heated floor. The directions are total junk regarding ditra heat with vinyl above. The “self leveling” concrete that is supposed to encapsulate the wires 1/4 above the mat is absolutely impossible to accomplish.

Do you know what Schluter wants for one of those 6 foot black linear grates? EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS for JUST THE GRATE! (the drain body is a few hundred more)! One more reason why Schluter stinks. And oh yeah, the tileable grates Nick raves about are disgusting. Ive installed a bunch; they rest on dozens of metal teeth that catch hair and dirt and the thinset and tile sides get mildewy quickly.
