We could debate all day about how the Spiderverse animators were mistreated and overworked, but at the end of the day, the animation of those films and the work put into them cannot be understated. The sheer artistry on display with them and the way they highlight the storytelling is incredible. I always love watching movies where you can see how much work and love went into it. My problem with Wish’s animation is not that I doubt how much work went into it but that it looks unfinished. It looks very unpolished and like the animators were rushed somehow. Every movement and character looks like a third draft rather than a final one. It just feels and looks weird. When you’ve been spoiled by the best, you’re not going to be as lenient when it comes to a cheap copycat. Disney just continues to repeat its same mistakes and taking the wrong lessons from Spiderverse’s success.

I think a big problem is that these stylized animated films are generally utilizing choppier frame-rates to imitate the look of hand-drawn cartoons, but a studio like Disney has never really done anything like that before. Nearly all of their output has had really fluid and polished animation and its gone down to define their overall image, so combining that with the water colored styled aesthetic, flatter-looking backgrounds, and a lack of natural lighting just makes the whole thing come across as cheap-looking.

Spider- Verse's style worked because it reflected the story it was trying to tell. It looked like a comic book come to life because it was about a superhero. Another good show that I think took notes from Spider- Verse was Arcane. The characters are 3D with painted backgrounds but instead of looking like a comic book, it takes inspiration from video game effects. Because Arcane is inspired by League of Legends, a video game. I had the opportunity to meet the directors of spiderverse at a director's panel my school had. They were talking about this exact issue that the animation industry now faces where any film that looks like spider verse is now deemed a spiderverse clone rather than being its own individual thing and that they think it's a very bad perception for hollywood to have because rather than trying to do something different everytime, they're all lumped into the same category. I would have loved a harder lean into the 'storybook' style; more popup-cutout pieces, more paint texture in the backgrounds and props... As it stands, it looks like those textures will only really shine on the big screen, and in trailers and previews we're only seeing flat, way-too-subtle versions of that. The characters themselves also look very flat (spiderverse didn't have particularly textured skin either, but they had more angular models, and dynamic and textured lighting for a larger portion of the scenes to make up for that). Good video. I'm glad I'm not the only one who expressed concern about every animated film trying to be like Spider-Verse to the point that the film will no longer be special anymore. And I also feel like if Wish was made by another animation studio than Disney, then the animation community would eat it up. Look at the reactions to The Bad Guys' animation style vs. Turning Red's animation style, though that doesn't explain why fellow Dreamworks film Ruby Gillman's animation style got some flack for resembling thin line animation even though The Bad Guys looks more thin line animation-esque than Ruby Gillman. If there's a nitpick to this video, it would be that Spider-Verse, although did popularized the blending of 2D and 3D animation style together, is technically not the first 3D animated to not be photorealistic. Almost every 3D animated film is stylized (I said "almost". Not all.). For instance, look at Madagascar. It has a cartoony style with smears animation and pauseable moments and it's a stark contrast to Shrek and Shark Tale's realistic style. Same with The Peanuts Movie, released 3 years before SpiderVerse. It captured the spirit of Charles Schulcz' drawings but done in 3D animation. Other than that, good video.

Just to give an update. It turns out Wish is so beautifully animated. It’s just that apps like KZbin have done a disservice by compressing the footage. I watched Wish in theaters. And it looked better on the big screen. Once I got it on digital in UHD, the detail is amazing. It’s a really stunningly animated movie. They combined the 2 animations by using 3d models, and then layering it with 2d watercolor. Sometimes even with 2d backgrounds. Looks like a watercolor story book.

Yeah I agree. Each 2d 3d mix has its own unique style. Spider Verse is like a Comic Book style. TMNT is based of how the Turtles would draw. Etc. As for Wish. The people behind it said they wanted to combine 2d and 3d to honor both Classic and Modern Disney. And production began all the way back in 2018. So them wanting to profit from mixed animation can’t really be it. I also think that they’re going for a storybook like aesthetic with the animation. I’ve actually seen it in really good quality in 4k Ultra Hd versions of Wish’s trailers. And the animation looks great. However it sadly doesn’t look as good in anything that isn’t the best quality resolution video, or theater that isn’t a IMAX or Dolby Vision theater. But yes. It is strange how this kind of animation is called “Spiderverse style” cause each mixed animation film has its own animation style too. Only thing in common is well, mixing 2d with 3d.
@caylya7869 Жыл бұрын
This is the one thing that pisses me off. Spider-verse didn’t even invent stylistic animation. Wish looks nothing like spider-verse. I bet if captain underpants came out after spider-verse they would say it’s inspired by spider-verse, they aren’t. All spider-verse did was have studios go out into stylistic territory, that’s it. That doesn’t mean they get inspired by spider-verse art style. Jesus Christ dude. Disney’s Wish is inspired by it’s own movies, the problem isn’t spider-verse, it’s seeing if studios are using there stylized animation to tell the story or just lazily slapping it on.

I agree with you. People keep saying it looks unfinished when it actually looks so much better, but KZbin compresses the image too much. It can definitely look half hearted at times since the cel shading is subtle. The water color backgrounds though are beautiful.

well, in my opinion, I don't think the so-called "Spiderverse style" ruined animation or anything like that. I would say that the best way to make this type of animation is getting inspired by an artstyle and combine it with another one, like you said in the video (Spiderverse based on comic books, Puss in Boots based on fairy tales picturebooks, Nimona based on medieval paintings, etc.). Another unique example would be "The First Slam Dunk" from 2022. It combines the "Spiderverse style" with Anime and the result looks spectacular. Soooo yeah, it's not Spiderverse's fault but rather from Disney (just like some other dude said in the comments)
@heybuddy3616 Жыл бұрын
honestly, I wish that Wish’s animation would have taken more notes from Disney’s post-renaissance films, just before the switch to 3D. Atlantis, Tarzan, and treasure planet all combined 2d and 3d in ways that felt innovative: 3d vehicles, environments, and even prosthetics mixed with distinctive character designs, effective twist villains, and fun stories. that was new technology at the time - imagine what animators today could accomplish!

IMO the Spiderverse movies are the pinnacle of big screen Spider-Man stories and honestly some of the best movies in general I've ever watched. The animators deserve all the praise they're getting. But many other studios have experimented with that 2.5D artstyle before the first Spiderverse. Fortiche studios worked with Riot to create another media masterpiece, Arcane, later on but they've made tons of videos with Riot in the past using that 2.5D style and are also pretty fantastic.
@PeterPeter-pr2hi Жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I’ve been worrying about Everytime a new animation style comes along that people really like, studios seem to take the wrong notes from it, thinking that this is the new animation style that they should all utilise, usually throwing the old one in the garbage. This happened when 3D animation took over, and since people really praised it, it suddenly meant that 2D animation was “for kids”, and look where we are now…. 2D is basically dead, and 3D has completely taken over. The same trend seems to occur, as people really praised Spider-Verse’s feel, yet recently started bashing Pixar’s more realistic look. And listen, I am not saying that the Pixar animation is 100% flawless, but I feel like when there are problems with some movies’ quality, people immediately equate the animation with it, and as Pixar/Disney has made some movies recently that haven’t lived up to the hype, now this animation seems to be targeted too. But honestly, I would be sad to see realistic 3D animation go entirely, as it worked wonderously in some movies. Spider-Verse’s animation is also really great, but it is because it’s meant to look like a comic book coming onto the screen - a realistic animation style wouldn’t work as great with it. But there are some movies that it works better with, yet still, it seems like studios don’t get it, and we all need the Spider-Verse style now. And I mean, it can work in movies that don’t necessarily require it (Puss in Boots 2 for example, was enhanced by this animation, and it worked really well, but it wasn’t a necessity for the movie), all I’m saying is improve the writing first - animation is an easy scapegoat, and it’s entirely unfair to all those animators who work hard on it.

Nice analysis but hate the clickbait-y title. Not to mention with a touch of ragebait, too. But I personally believe that the comic book-esque animation is starting to become a trending bandwagon that other studios want to hop on which is starting to get tiring. I would love to see studios produce a 2D animated feature for theaters for once that is NOT based on an existing property like a TV show for example

Personally I just call it cel shaded animation. Because that’s what it is. Using filters & harsh shadows to evoke a 2D aesthetic while having the weight & smoothness of 3D animation. It’s always been a thing, but honestly before Spider-Verse name a cel shaded movie that was given a theatrical budget on that level. They were always tv projects, which is why they never went beyond a basic filter. But now with theatrical budgets, they can be more experimental. We had 2D animation, 3D animation, now we have cel shaded animation. And I am here for it all.

The argument here is that SpiderVerse’s praise stems from animation being used as a MEDIUM rather than a STYLE. For so long, animation has tried to imitate what real-life looks like , almost like it could be filmed with a normal camera, but in that specific world in which the movie takes place. Spiderverse creatively broke away from that in terms of its storytelling ability, THROUGH the elements of its animation, which is where the “right way” stems from. The other ‘clones’ are similar in the regard of trying to approach storytelling through the visual effects and animation aspects (frame rate, lighting, art style), that a filmed movie could not. That’s why things that recede back to ‘normal’ animation seem lackluster in comparison.

good video and commentary, but the title and stuff is VERY clickbait and ragebait-y. i would suggest at least adding a question mark or something to the end of the video title, like "wish's animation is bad... and it's all spiderverse's fault?" to at least give some indication of your stance and the purpose of the video itself so you don't have people just clicking on the video and disliking it out of spite without actually watching it. i was tempted to dislike just because of the clickbait myself. it's a good video and i get the algorithm sucks, but yeah. just my two cents

This is NOT Spiderverse's fault even remotely... This is Disney's fault. Wish was originally going to be a 2d animation film, but they tried to make it mostly 3d with a watercolor filter because it was cheaper and easier than doing 2d. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish also used a combination of 2d and 3d and that movie was GREAT for both the story AND the animation, but the idiots at Disney just assumed its success came from the animation style or something. :/

I don't agree with everything Ralph Bakshi says, however, I think he was right when he said that artstyle is important to good storytelling. I think the reason why Spider-verse's animation worked so well was because it enhanced the action. Every move had more oomph and impact. And it could be very calm and aesthetic when it wanted to be. I don't know what Wish is trying to enhance in its story.

Correct me if I’m wrong, I guess you may have seen the low quality version due to the issue of compositing the trailer into KZbin, so I’ve heard. I can see what you mean, thought this may be a hate video. Let’s not forget we had other animated films stylized that was praised but not many can admit the history, ironically Disney utilized that with Robin Hood, 101 Dalmatians, or Sword in the Stone that had budget cuts yet passed by with rough animation. Kinda hypocritical to attack ones that has passion and heavily inspired when defending decades old one that had the same thing, at least you ain’t one. Decent breakdown.
