Trivia - In early 1970, the band secured an opening spot for Deep Purple. Ritchie Blackmore, later recommended Wishbone Ash to producer Derek Lawrence, helping them secure a record deal. Andy Powell stated he cheekily joined in with Blackmore during his sound checks "Ritchie was a respected guitarist and I was new to the scene. We traded a bunch of guitar licks and he was impressed enough to ask whether we had a record deal. When I said “no”, he offered to help and the rest is history!

The twin guitars of Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield saw them on this tour in 1974 at Newcastle Odeon. As clear as a bell live as on the album. One of my best-ever concerts. It's well worth a full album listen.

Hi blamhof. Yes, 10th October 1974. I was there. Newcastle Odeon. It was the There's the Rub tour. Disappointed, of course, that Ted had left the band, but Laurie didn't disappoint anyone. It was, indeed, a great gig. One of my best ever, too. I think they opened with Silver Shoes, but perhaps that's a piece of false memory. You're probably already aware, but there's a great video on YT of the band playing this song in about '75 in Cologne on the New England tour. The beauty of the guitar playing never fails to affect me.

Hi Guys, This is from my favourite Wishbone Ash album "There's The Rub" and I had 3 tracks written down for a marathon among my list of songs. The other 2 were "Lady Jay" & an instrumental called "F.U.B.B" both tracks again, with those prominent twin lead guitars they are so famous for. So I just crossed this one off. Lol ... I love "Persephone" and the lyrics are wonderful. That final guitar solo I just put the volume up to 11 and .. omg is it sooo good !!!! Just happy you got to hear this. You need to hear it again without any distractions ... and loud !!! Great reaction and I love Wishbone Ash. Great studio albums and a good number of amazing live albums. Thankyou byeee Jim X

One of the best gigs I ever went to in the early 70's was Wishbone Ash supported by Joan Armatrading at the Birmingham Town Hall. They were promoting their classic Argus album, the third of an incredible trio of Wishbone Ash with the original twin guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. These guys were pioneers and inspirations for many great guitarists and guitar bands that followed. Ted had left and been replaced by Laurie Wisefield for this album, and I don't know it well, but it seems to me that the standard didn't drop! Very cool track. Many thanks Nick x2 and Alexia. Argus would probably be a popular full album contender.

Wishbone Ash, Renaissance and Caravan shared a common management around this period; Andy Powell of WA guested on the Renaissance track Ashes Are Burning, returning the compliment for John Tout having played keyboards on WA's Argus album. There's perhaps too tight a hold on serving the musical arrangement in many WA tracks; you can set your watch by them - it's in a good way, a crafted fashion, which perhaps inhibits an audience's sense of being carried away by the whole proceedings. Then again, many of their tracks set out to disprove that theory and usually succeed. Try the rest of this album for an impression of the variety of their material. Their most recent studio album was released in early 2020, Coat Of Arms, no less varied.

For me and the guys I hung with back in the day, they were a hard rock band with prog like epics, like this cool ballad with the amazing outro. The original band is their classic period and best stuff but when guitarist Martin Turner left, Laurie Wisefield came aboard for more excellent albums, including the song you just reacted to. Their best album is Argus. That entire side of Argus, starting with the King Will Come , is their best side of music as it flows from one song to the next in a timeless display of twin guitar interplay, unreal musicianship and a vibe that permeates the tunes. Incredible album, do the entire thing sometime. Rock On! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

I'm surprised no one mentioned Barnstorm, Joe Walshs' group post James Gang. First three albums are brilliant! "Barnstorm", "The Smoker you Drink, the Player you Get" & "So What" (not labeled as a Barnstorm album but with all the same musicians plus...) I saw WA twice during the Argus period ( also check out the Pilgrimage album, Vas Dis is great) & Barnstorm a handful of times all around the same time period.
