Wishbone Ash playing Phoenix as the last number in their set at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh on 22nd October 2021.
This was a terrific night and the band all played exceptionally well.
Well done, Lads.

Wishbone Ash, UFO and Thin Lizzy. What do they lack if compared to bands such as Purple, Zeppelin and Sabbath ? Nothing at all !! Amazing catalogs, great songs, fantastic musicians. God bless Andy for keeping the flame lit and carrying the flag.

Looking forward to this weekends show in Redwood City , Ca . To think I used to walk to High School with a little cassette tape player listening to this . The greatest " hardly known " band in all of rock music .

I still have my cassette tapes of their first album and Pilgrimage. They were very well known in Britain. Led the way in the twin guitar league.

@@AuricMists Darn right they did ! Only college radio and the live shows were the way people found out about them here . I've been a fan for almost 50 years .

Hi Gordon, it was a couple of months ago now I know, but did you enjoy the gig - and curious to know how many roughly attended? Over here in Blighty we realised WA never really made it in the States, unlike Tull, Purple, Floyd, Zep etc. Interested in your thoughts as to why? Cheers Dave Wirral, UK

@@davidmortimer4499 Say David , glad to here from you . The deal with Wishbone Ash over here was that the radio stations did not give them much of a chance except for college stations that had more flexibility in the playlist . But they won over a lot of fans by touring , and they did tour a lot . The gig in Redwood City was great , I had a wonderful time at the club ' Little Fox ' . Not that many folks there , pretty much the same group that come every 2 years . But it was fun , and the band was very tight .

@@gordonlandreth9550 Hi Gordon, thanks for getting back. Just had a gander at the Little Fox - looks like a fun venue. Sad to say never been as far as west as where you are, but did some work in the 90's in Trenton, Philadelphia and New York area. That's still probably closer to here in the UK than you I guess. Saw WA at a venue called The Live Rooms in Chester, Cheshire back in October. Was their first gig, due to the Covid issue, for two years, and it was like they'd never been away. Reckon about 350 in, mostly middle aged men like our crowd of course, but where some 20 year olds in too, so encouraging. Hope to catch them again a few times before they pack it in. Speaking of quintessentially English acts, has the Kate Bush revival caught on with the youth of your area? Know it was down to the TV programme Stranger Things, but wow., hope for me yet!

We saw them at Chester - first time since 1979 or thereabouts at the Liverpool Empire, ouch! First gig back after you know what, the last one prior was Steve Harley Feb 2019. Both veterans now of course, but both still brilliant. Don't reckon any of us will make another 42 years so hopefully they'll be back soon!

Think your Edinburgh Usher Hall was the equivalent of the Empire back in the day. WA could easily fill that size venue back in the late 70's. Dropped down to 500ish now I guess. Not that it matters, more intimate now. I thought they were really good and we will certainly be going again next year, governments permitting. Great post too, many thanks

@@davidmortimer4499 Thanks. First time I saw WA was around 1972 in the old Odeon in Edinburgh, I think it was the Argus tour. That was a fairly big venue, not quite as big as the Usher Hall but held a few thousand heads. Unfortunately, that place has been lying unused for a couple of decades now.

@@AuricMists Sorry for late reply, only just picked this post up. Didn't realise the Usher was Haymarket way (an area of Edinburgh I know and prefer to the old/new town. Only due to the tourism element of course). Done a bit of digging on the Odeon but can't find much about it. Note there is an Odeon cinema by the Usher, but presumably not the same place? Back to Liverpool if I may, the Empire in the 70's and 80's was the venue for the big bands, it's still with us but used as a theatre again now, so the pantos and what not are held there. The Liverpool Stadium was the equivalent of your Odeon I think, Hawkwind famously recorded their Space Ritual album at the venue. It is however long since demolished. Finally, note WA are back at The Queens Hall in October, and at the Liverpool 02 Academy in November, which ironically is a small venue, located right behind the Empire! Keep in touch..

@David Mortimer This is the old Odeon on street view. www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.9428225,-3.1828744,3a,75y,214.75h,97.65t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sYzlGa1B5NNBB1yPYcAO5VQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 It's been like this for decades. I really don't know why Edinburgh council have let it get this way. They spend billions installing a new tram system yet let cultural development suffer by doing *this* - it's an eyesore. Same thing happened with Studio 24 and The Venue - both used to stand on Calton Road but got closed because they built high price designer flats around them and the residents started to complain about the noise. Culture clearly being squeezed out of the city. Big venues now appear to be relegated to the outskirts of the city, like the Corn Exchange. However, we still have the Empire (now the Festival Theatre, with a different facia www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.946821,-3.185752,3a,75y,233.36h,100.69t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sO_oHNGQWcMY-c9m5E0DsVA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 ), the Usher Hall, the Playhouse and the Queen's Hall, to name a few. I can't think of any notable published performances recorded in Edinburgh, but that's not to say there aren't any.. I have a lot of bootleg cassettes, though, going back to the 70s. If I ever play them again it will be to transcribe them to digital format. Speak soon.
