Thank you🎉 I've got the following question. Which one is correct "I wish the band came here to Lima" or "I wish the band would come here to Lima"?
@oxfordenglishnow15 күн бұрын
The correct sentence is "I wish the band would come here to Lima." Here's why: "I wish" + past simple is used to express a wish about the present or future that is unlikely or impossible. For example, "I wish I had a car" (but I don't). However, when expressing a wish about something someone else does or does not do in the future, we often use "I wish" + would. In your case, "I wish the band would come" refers to a future action you hope for, but can't control. So the sentence "I wish the band would come here to Lima" is grammatically correct and conveys the meaning that you hope the band will come in the future.

THANKS FOR YOUR EXPLANATION. A DOUBT: MY FRIEND HAD AN EXAM LAST WEEK BUT I DON'T KNOW IF HE PASSED OR FAILED. MY DESIRE IS THAT HE DID WELL. HOW WOULD YOU SAY? I HOPE HE PASSED THE EXAM. I HOPE HE HAS PASSED THE EXAM I HOPE HE HAD PASSED THE EXAM THANKS IN ADVANCE.
@oxfordenglishnow5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugo, I think you could say either, "I hope he passed the exam," or "I hope he has passed the exam." It is a choice between the past simple and the present perfect and it really depends on the viewpoint of the speaker. My first instinct was to use the past simple as it is a completed action in the past. However, if you want to convey a connection or result in the present. The third sentence doesn't work as its the past perfect which is used to represent an earlier past and here we don't have another action that it precedes. Hope that helps! 🙏

Hi Ritu, For your question, the first sentence is correct: "The party was great: I wish you had been there." For your second question you can use was able to. Hi, you can say, I wish you had listened to me, which is about a past regret, you didn’t listen. I wish you would listen to me is a wish about the present and future, I wish you would listen now… and you don’t. Hope that helps ! 🙏🏼
@oscarmc5908 Жыл бұрын
I wish I had solved my doubts, but I didn't :( In the practice section of the video, I don't understand the following: 1st sentence: I wish I had more free time. "talking about the present and a situation you would like to change, but you can't" 3rd sentence: I wish the weather would change. I hate the cold! "to talk about something in the present that we would like to change, but can't". It's the same explanation, isn't it? I understand the theory (would for desires and past simple for regrets), but I can't tell them appart if I have to choose between them.
@oxfordenglishnow Жыл бұрын
Hi Oscar, In the first sentence it is an unreal situation, you don't have more free time in the present, so you use the past simple. Whereas, wish + would is for something you find annoying and something you don't expect to happen. Or it can be used to complain about a situation. Also wish and would is only for things you can't change, whereas in the first sentence maybe you could get more free time. I would suggest you watch the video again to help you understand. I hope that helps!
@oscarmc5908 Жыл бұрын
@@oxfordenglishnow Thank you very much for your reply and your thorough explanation. Now I understand this matter. The "problem" is that, after watching the video again, a new question has arisen in my head: It is clear that you can use wish + would to talk about bothering things in the present but, can you use wish + would to talk about future situations? Example: I have plan to to plan tennis tomorrow morning. I have just checked the weather forecast and it says it will rain. Therefore, "I wish it wouldn't rain tomorrow morning" sounds reasonable to me. I find this situation annoying and I don't expect it to change, as the weather forecast for the next day is quite accurate. Nonetheless, I think I could also say "I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow morning", asI feel that the verb hope is more appropriate to talk about things we want to happen in the future. Am I overthinking? :P
