That's a great point! Most guys you see with the ball do a little dribble, look around, play games... Worthy just took it to you, left, right, up the middle, its going in the basket and you can't stop him.

Great, great video. Big Game James is too often underappreciated for the talent, skill, savvy and spirit he brought to the Showtime-era Lakers. Amazing body control that made him the ultimate fastbreak finisher, his uncanny knack for sliding into passing lanes in the biggest games (NC’s championship game. Game 6 against the Celtics in ‘87, the whole series vs the Pistons in ‘88 and many more), and ownership of the quickest first-step in NBA history all made him invaluable, even on a team with 3 other overall #1 picks (Magic, Kareem, and Mychal Thompson). Great clips, strong editing, and plenty of Chick Hearn play-by-play. Love this video.

For some reason I see post saying he was the forgotten man, overshadowed etc etc. But Worthy usually was the top scorer for the Lakers. I think he averaged a little more than Magic. Kareem was the 3rd option after worthy got there.

Magic had the name and the passing game/leadership, Kareem had the history and the stats, but for those of us watching the 80's it was mainly the James Worthy Show and "Who will he embarrass tonight?"

I don't believe that Worthy ever led the 80s Lakers in scoring. It was usually Kareem from '80 to '86 and Magic from '87 to '90. Worthy might have led them in scoring in '91 when the team had been watered down, but it still may have been Magic; I'd have to check.

Barkley said he almost got traded for James Worthy like in 1991 or 1992. Worthy deserved better than to play with Magic Johnson... it just makes his career look dependent upon Magic. Worthy was worthy and I don't think there was another team that he could have succeeded on except Detroit because Isiah made sure his post guys got money.

There's a game where Magic got ejected early against I think Phoenix, and James had a stupendous night of scoring rebounding, handing out 5+ assists ... everybody knows Worthy would have been a standout without Magic.

THE BRAIN Difference was those teams were built , the main parts through the draft. And teams stayed together for around 5 years. Not like. Lebron or KD chasing rings. Basketball was 1000 times better back then.

You can't critize today's era of players or more specifically LeBron for creating superteams or benefiting from superteams when superteams have always existed which many legends also benefited from. The only difference is players now have put the power in their own hands as opposed to being at the mercy of a franchise. Thanks largely to LeBron. Players from the past get too much praise for staying with one team when honestly it's not that they was loyal its just that they didn't have the ability to leave due to contacts being made more team friendly then player friendly then. Former players like KG have expressed loyalty is overrated and has stated he would've left earlier if he could have.

Antony Taylor The difference is that super teams didn’t really exist until the mid 90s. See a super team is a team comprised of roughly 3-4 all star players. Most super teams have players that sign in free agency. Super teams back then, had a what if beside. It’s not like the Lakers knew they would have a super team. Their players grew and developed over time. Just like the current GSW warriors. 5 years ago nobody expected them to be a superteam. They developed.
