"Waile" - taken from the new ‘Waile’ 7”, out January 27, 2023.
A visual essay capturing the intimate and riotous moments from WITCH’s first three tours of 2022 in the US, EU and UK - shot, directed, and edited by Gio Arlotta.
“Waile” is WITCH’s first original material since 1984, as well as the band’s first release with co-founder and vocalist Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda since 1977.
“‘Waile’ was one of the songs that I brought to the WITCH when I joined in 1978. While it was played live often back in the day, it was never recorded until the new formation of the band picked it up 43 years later during a rehearsal on an island in Kenya, where the band embraced it and made it their own. A few months after that, they gave it a new lease of life by recording it in Lusaka’s legendary DB Studios. Sang in my native language Luvale, the subject matter is a nostalgic wailing for home of ancient African tribes that would eventually settle in Zambia.”

Great band, and if this single is anything to go by, they’ve still got it. Anyone know how many original members? Singer and keyboard I’m guessing

Only the frontman is part of the original band, but damn the new band is pretty good eh

The keyboard player was also part of the band, but in the early 80s. Jagari is the only original band member still alive.

Patrick Mwondela is my Dad and he is still alive and kicking on the keyboard, he was part of the 80s band.

@@MrsGurnett oh my god, is there any possible way of getting an interview with him? Im aspiring zambian musician based in cape rown, and my father showed me this band when I was child, and ive been in loVe with the music since. your dad is incredible!

I hope there is an LP album in the works! This song is so incredible, a collection of similar styled music would be mind blowing! Can't wait to see what more surprises lay in wait. Long live WITCH!
