Thank You: nothing is much different different today regarding "magic"; I appreciate you pointing that out. Your pumpkin lights are just right for the season and your "smokey" intro is very cool. My own grandmother planted "by the moon": some plants grew better when planted in certain phases of the moon than others and vice versa. She was very upset when someone pointed out that what she was doing was considered "pagan". She always considered herself a "good christian woman who would never do such things!".
@margielee20882 жыл бұрын
I've heard that the gravitational pull of the moon affects moisture in the soil much like it affects the tides. Basically full moons pull water closer to the surface helping plants to root. Don't know if that's true but that would mean your grandmother was using what God gave her and not being a "pagan".

I think it is very important to make a distinction between Tudor and Stuart times. Very few people were executed for witchcraft in Tudor times. Under the Tudors, those found guilty were likely to be fined or whipped. But when James I took the throne, the execution of witches became commonplace, as it had been in Scotland.

My 9th great grandfather, Samual wardwell was hung for witchcraft in 1692 in Salem, and other people in my family were accused but they got away. I think the Salem trials were a huge sham to get their properties and what they did to sams family was awful...they put the younger children with other families, accused his wife and step daughter of witchcraft and threw them in jail (they were released a year later) , and then took everything!! Sam wasn’t a witch but a Quaker, and he read palms for fun but sometimes his stuff came true which was unfortunately his to his demise!! He was an architect building up Salem town and he liked to have fun, and the richest widow in town married him, but the puritans were jealous of him cos they didn’t think he deserved that! His son went back years later and sued the town and cleared his dads name...which I’m very glad he did!

In my distant family, a charge of witchcraft was leveled at Jane Southworth, the mother of the heir to the estate in an attempt to keep the property under the control of a Roman Catholic member of the family (she and her deceased husband had converted to the Anglican church). She was one of the Samlesbury witches, a proceeding that ran almost concurrently with the Pendle witch trials. Previous lords had steadfastly remained Catholic (and watched as Elizabeth I stole 75% of the personal property and a like amount of the real estate of the manorial lands). Her accuser was her husband's uncle, who was a Catholic priest in 'hiding'. It's interesting to hear Englands classification of witches as, in Jane's case, the charges were based on a Continental concept of witchcraft which was so completely foreign to English magistrates that the charges were dropped after a day at trial (but after Jane had suffered in Lancaster castle prison for 6 weeks while her 10-year-old son was taken from her by the family). Many years ago I read a great research paper that made the connection between the persecution of women, in general, and midwives in particular and the rise of the medical profession, theorizing that much of the killing was done to eliminate competition of male doctors at the expense of female midwives.

What a wonderful and fitting talk! I absolutely love hearing about witches and witchcraft from Tudor and Stuart times. I find all things of that nature very fascinating! Thank you so much for today's talk Ms. Claire the witch! 😜

It is all very fascinating! I myself have had a lifelong interest in the subject, as well as all things pertaining to world religions and spiritualists, both historical and modern! It's one of the things that make me grateful that I grew up in the country, with little to do, and learned to love reading at a young age. I know one person, one of the very best, most lovely (inside and out) people that I've ever met, who I'd consider for sure to be a "real witch," among the dozens I've met or known who claim to be such. Talking to him, and spending time with him, is always very interesting, as he probably has forgotten more on the subject than most people have ever known!

It's a common misconception that witch-hunting and witch trials were a medieval phenomenon, but that couldn't be further from the truth. With-hunting was a Renaissance and early modern preoccupation, not a medieval one. Witch trials were extremely rare before the late 15th century, and where witchcraft was prosecuted (usually locally and informally) punishments tended to be fairly light, a switching or a day in the stocks or something like that. That's because the medieval Church held that the Devil lacked the power to give witches the powers they were later came to have, and anyone who believed they had such powers was delusional rather than actually being an agent of Satan. In fact, the belief that witches could possibly be real was defined as heresy by the medieval Church (They did believe in superstitions like charms and astrology, but at that time those were generally not seen as having anything to do with the Devil - particularly astrology, since they believed that the heavenly bodies moved according to God's will and therefore any messages that could be divined from their motions must have been sent by God.) The more Manichaean view of the world being at war between God and the Devil, with witches as the Devil's agents on earth and good Christians having the duty to fight a war against the Devil and his agents, was an early modern one. The practice of witchcraft, rather than the belief that it was possible to be a witch, came to be seen as heresy. It went hand-in-hand with the Reformation, although it was quickly adopted by the Catholic Church as well. Luther was a particularly fervent believer in witches and the necessity of finding and destroying them.

The early modern era was full of wars, plagues, famines, and other disasters - much of the latter two due to climate change that no one understood, much of the former to the collapse of institutions and common beliefs that had provided stability in the Middle Ages - and people needed some way to understand why these things happened. Religion provided a framework for the explanations and witches provided a convenient scapegoat.

I was just delving into genome editing last night. Also there is at home genome editing kits! My take away was this. First, in decades we will be looking at how we tried to cure cancers with the horror and delight that we look at medieval cures for illness. Second. We will have youtube episodes of dangers of the mellenial home, where we will astounded by how readily the average home owner advanced the research of gene therapy and all of it's pitfalls along the way to becoming safe and understood and used properly! Kind of like asbestos being the perfect fire retardent! Yet it can kill very slowly and is in everything! Yet,sometimes they get it very right. For instance,Metformin which is used to control diabetes and is a derivative of Lilac and has been used since pre Roman times as a cure for frequent urination. Some things work,and others are completely rediculous. But only time and observation will tell. Recently I read a paper in which the skin of mango causes cell death when introduced to HeLa cells. I'd rather eat a mango skin than rabbit brains or my own feces. But,it is all very fascinating and experimental!

That's exactly what happened in my family - the Catholic members did not want the manor lands to go to the Anglican heir so they tried to have his mother convicted of witchcraft which, besides killing her, would have barred her son from inheriting the estate.

I've always said that if I had lived back then I'd have been hanged or burned as a witch. Left handed, into natural remedies, astrology, tarot, independent, and very very mouthy, lol!
@brucetucker48474 жыл бұрын
At that time tarot and astrology weren't really seen as the same as witchcraft. Their conception of witchcraft was concerned with making a pact with the devil, usually involving sex, and cursing people. White magic was more or less seen as stemming from the natural order of things and thus ultimately coming from God. Astrology in particular since it was God, not the Devil, who was believed to have ordained the movement of the heavenly bodies. However, being an independent and mouthy woman could definitely get you into hot water, especially if you contradicted the religious authorities!

@Lyndell-P3 жыл бұрын
The subject of this video is of course "Witchcraft in Tudor Times"! That said - I will attempt to answer your question! The difference between Religion and Superstition is that "they differ in the belief of a community". cont... RELIGION is confined to worshipping Gods and devoting to them. SUPERSTITION is just a belief that relies on rituals performed over them. Superstitions are based on practices and supernatural happenings across the world. cont.... I am NO expert (far from it) but your question was interesting. ALSO the above is NOT my own interpretation - but from Research. I hope this assists in answering your question (to some extent).
