These skills and many others were developed over countless generations and are in great danger of being lost. To see a younger person keeping at least one craft alive is so encouraging! All too often it is a person who is over 60 and the last in his line.
@WitchcraftWhips7 жыл бұрын
Mergrew 01 I agree with you. I hope the craft will live on. That goes for other crafts as well. I try to support the whipmaking and braiding branch as much as I can. I'm a member of the Australian plaiters and whipmakers association and sadly there's not to many "younger" active members. Thanks for your encouragement!

Witchcraft Whips. You are very welcome! I'm a Woodturner, and try to pass on the art to others. However, computer games, girls and pressures of modern life make for very few youngsters being interested. Good luck for the future!

Well done. Very nice work. Last one I make is close to 50 years old now. It's still hanging out in the shop. I get it down once in a while to see if I can still work it. Wish my hands would let me make them now, but I'm not real sure I remember how. I braided bull ropes, as a young man too. Sadly, I can't remember how to do those at all any more. Heck to get old, enjoy being young while you can !!

I know there definitely is much more. I make bags, and I'm still struggling with hidden steps that tutorials do not show. Currently, I am trying to master lacing. Having all the tools isn't enough, which I do, but the finesse with leather crafts come only with dedication and practice and finding those steps or methods that make each work unique, that which can never be emphasized enough or replicated in a tutorial. Again, impressive.

Hi, I was hoping you might be able to help, I've done handle braiding/plaiting, Turks head knots, I can put an eye splice or a back splice in 3 strand twisted rope, and on a few things I've made, just little 3 braid handle loops but I'm interested in trying a diy quirt whip and most of the examples I see appear to have a loop that is plaits (belly?) braided around a core, then spliced back into those plaits (like an eye splice?) Before another layer of wrap (belly again?) is added to the handle. Can you point me to a good resource for how this core-d loop would be made?

@WitchcraftWhips4 жыл бұрын
I have not. For what purpose?
@jonhunter87254 жыл бұрын
You can pick old used ones that need to be replaced from the local welders for free. Basically it's a long thin flexible spring covered in a rubber casing. I just thought it may be worth trying.

This is one of the most awesome videos I’ve watched on making whips. The music sets the tone for sure. Timeless tradition. About how long would you say it takes you to make one whip? Roughly.
@WitchcraftWhips6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Brianna! That's very kind of you. That's a though one that I get a lot! I need to prepare some kind of good answer one of these days.. But I'd say roughly 8-20 hours depending on length, plait count, pattern work etc. Hope that does it for your question! Thanks again.
