Medusa is really unfairly treated by popular conception; in every one of the few stories she's in, she's the victim. Her origin story has her being cursed by Athena because she had sex with Poseidon in one of her temples, which even in the versions where the sex is consensual was still definitely not her idea. Then, with her face cursed so that anyone who looks at it dies, she flees to a remote island where, in a sane world, no one would be endangered by her. But then a bunch of would-be heroes seek her out and try to kill her, and when she kills them in order to defend herself, it just draws more would-be heroes to her island until one of them inevitably succeeds. Her life is constantly being used as a piece in the games played by forces far greater than her, yet the stories we tell about her label her as a monster, a hag, something evil and destructive. Life is not fair.

I think that's why many go into these things, because they're unsatisfied with life. And the things that can happen seem to be true, from my own experience and what I've learned, there seems to be another side, another reality, and that can be both good and bad. But what's more important is that you respect it, at least when you meet it, because it is all similar. But no one will tell you these things.

Not a Nazi what I've learned from multiple areas of life is that the disadvantaged one or even unlucky one often has a harder time, and then will get pushed further in that direction by society, and then it's so easy to go into negative things. All that's seen is not good, and I do believe we don't know what we do sometimes, but that goes along with the problems in the world. I think one of the best things we can do to help the world is to relish in the good things that do exist. And even in that one it's amazing they exist.

Well, I mean, in her representation in the world of Dota 2, she was the one mortal daughter of a sea goddess, and her sisters were all captured, as they were immortal, but the thieves left her behind because despite her beauty, she was not worth taking in their eyes. She prayed to her mother and in exchange for her beauty, she gained power unimaginable, with the goal of rescuing her sisters. And considering she's one of the scariest late game carries, I'd say that she was treated rather nicely in that depiction.

I am sad that crash course mythology is almost over. I wish you talked about more myths and legends. I would have loved to hear more about animal, mythical creature, and monster myths. I love finding pop culture references and the thought bubble animations.

I felt like the first story was less about the Hag and more about the three sisters. Two were greedy and did not help the animals/buildings, and thus were ratted out. The third sister was generous and kind, and was helped, by the animals/buildings. This was more a story with a moral, and all the hag was was a place holder for "insert evil character here." I'm sure there are far more unique witches or hags that could have been illustrated here.

Yes the story is that generous and kindness the dangers of hoarding and greed but the story is also agrarian tending in animals that would be in a farm working the mill not relying on a big bag of gold will eventually run out But with good moral Behavior and a good working ethic agrarian life means you will always provide. Just maybe just maybe you'll be rewarded a magical bag they will never run out of money if you have these characteristics. I think kind of defeats the moral of the story but it's also a typical belief system of feudalism agrarian societies that usually had a monarchy teaching the peasants will eventually be rewarded with all your hard work and virtue which never really actually happened to most peasants.

You missed my point. This vid was about witches and Hags in mythology. What was the witch's role here other than, "insert evil character here?" I would liked to have heard more about maybe the Morrigan (sp?) of Celtic Mythology, or Lilith.

but that's the whole point of this videos and learning myths and mythology to you can interpret that story anyway you want but it really it's meant to teach a lesson to the people of that age but you are right pointed out is about generous and kindness the dangers of hoarding and greed but the people of always needed "insert evil character here" would Harry Potter be that interesting without the main antagonist? or minor ones that are really heated like Umbridge "insert evil character here" has been put in almost every story every religion every mythology my point what was teaching the working aquarium people why stories are being told in to teach certain lessons I know insert evil character here is a is a running theme the look Santa Claus and Krampus in many things and why people do it is Up For Debate. yeah they could have had a different scenario with hags and witches but they chose this one I'm okay with it

Yes but this episode is about hags/witches and their roles. In previous episodes we've been given alternate perspectives through different stories, yet in the single story given the Cailleach is only shown as an antagonist, whereas the briefly mentioned Baba Yaga has filled the role of antagonist, magical donor, spiritual guide and mother figure in various stories she features in, and has roots in the matriarchal aspects of Slavic society and crematory burial rites that inspired her house on chicken legs. If the episode were to focus on a witch GODDESS, then I believe that Hecate would've been more appropriate, having the image of the hag, but also acting as a surrogate mother and guide to and from the Underworld, and being both respected and feared both within Greek society, and greatly so by her fellow immortals in mythology. Giving us a story that focuses on the roles of three girls only affected by the negative actions of a witch figure detracts from the richness of the topic that was meant to be discussed.

Then you missed the beauty of the story completely. The cllaich story is a great witch story specifically. The pieces are all in order and exactly right. It could be the ultimate witch story. Ugly witches tricking- this is the only way ugly people can get close enough to you to get power over you, by appearing weak and victims, and then betraying you and taking your power. She is jealous of youth and beauty and wealth. She preys on the weak (widow, with no man). The poverty causes the selfish girls to betray their own mother, thereby removing their family protection. Taking the money back doesn't bring back any protection, because they don't deserve it anymore, because it's not theirs once they betrayed their mother who gave them bread. They are not under her power anymore (refused the blessing for a bit of food) and she owns it rightfully. Being cold-hearted to even animals removed her from the wider family (the world/universe) and caused it to nature/the universe to not help her. Her betrayal of everything human and lifelike gives the witch the power to turn her to stone because she isn't human without having any connection to any living thing. The lesson is, being selfish causes you to lose the protection of everyone around you and leads to vulnerability and death. The only people who can survive alone are witches, who are evil and powerful. So don't be selfish unless you are a devious, totally ugly, evil person who doesn't care about people and lives only to do evil. The Scottish can tell a real story because they are real people.

Ah, Mike. 'Cailleach' is pronounced like 'kalyakh' (the Irish way) or 'kayakh' (the Scottish way, like the 'll' in Spanish). The various kind of cailleach aren't quite as negative as described in this video, and are usually either benevolent or at least ambivolent, in spite of their haggish appearence. However, they are often associated with extreme conditions, such as cold weather, sheer cliffs, mountains, untouched wilderness, &c. The worst thing you can say about a cailleach is that she fights the coming of the spring. Other than that, except for specific instances, they're positive figures.

Very interesting. Baba Yaga, who was also mentioned in the video. Is often more complicated than just a villain too. I know a lot about Russian fairy tales, and Baba Yaga is also often a helpful character who guides the protagonist towards their goal. She represents a mother or grandmother's power, which when we talk about Russian mothers, can sometimes be terrifying, something be lifesaving.

The interesting thing about the story about the caillach is the connection to the fairytale of Frau Holle, where she is more a beneficiary to good people and punishes bad ones. She also has connections to the Nordic goddess Hel. I love this series.

Baba Yaga is not an evil hag, though; she is always old and ugly (often with monstrous features), but sometimes plays role of a mentor, a "fairy godmother" of "Cinderellas" (because evil stepmothers are pretty prevalent in these stories). And many stories of young woman serving old witch, sometimes ending with heroine escaping her (wherein she's evil), other times she's being tested by her, often with her two predecessors not succeeding

Unbelievable. I made my nana read me the story of "The Hag and the Long Leather Bag" from some storybook I had as a kid. She hated it because it was so repetitive but it was one of my favorites. It's super weird hearing this story again so many years after forgetting it.

As a kid, I used to believe that sleeping on my back would bring the hag who would sit on your chest and torture you. Her sitting on your chest would make it hard to breathe and you might not wake up. For years, probably unintentionally now, I've made myself fall asleep on my side and stay there. It's funny how old tales can make a kid believe in something totally irrational. There were a lot of tales that I heard as a child.

Baba Yaga (which I have to say as a Russian-American, is pronounce BAba yaGA, and means "grandmother Yagá"), is very often a helping character in Russian fairy-tales (aka "skazki") as well. For example in the tale Tsarevna Lyagushka (the princess frog), Baba Yaga hosts Tsarevich Ivan for a night and guides him to the whereabouts of Koshchei the Deathless. In Afanasyev's version (the oldest recorded I believe), Ivan is actually helped by three Baba Yaga-like sisters, one after another. It is often the case with witches and hags that the patriarchal view of them as villains often misses the richer depth of meaning. This is especially true of Baba Yaga. She is like a real Russian mother or babushka, a powerful, fearsome figure, who you very much want on your side.

YAY! Celtic myth! ^_^ This segment also reminded of of when I went to Loughcrew in Co Meath, Ireland. It's also known as The Witch's Hill, and on the top there is a witch's chair and the view from it is incredible. One of the stories is of another old witch who lives, I think, beneath the mountain and on Imbolc (Feb 2nd) she goes out to look for more firewood, if she can't find anymore than that's the end of winter. It's kind of like an Irish Groundhog's Day story. It's sad to see this series coming to an end. This is easily my favorite Crash Course series.

A nice video as always. But I wanted to add a few things. 1. The Russian way to say Baba Yaga is to make stress on the last syllable: baba yagA'. The stress on first syllable is probably the polish variant? 2. Baba Yaga's Hut on Chicken Legs typically looks completely different (use the following Russian phrase to google it up: избушка на курьих ножках). 3. Nowadays she is probably the most frequently mentioned mythical character in Russia (among with Bogatyrs, Koschei the Deathless, Zmey Gorynich and some others). 4. The modern way to view Baba Yaga is somewhat ironical. Although she is acknowledged as being wicked and eating people from time to time, she is still considered to be a poor, disappointed old woman ill and lonely. And heros typically feel somewhat sorry for her. She also helps heros (willingly or unwillingly) quite often. 5. I haven't heard before about Baba Yaga petrifying someone or about the three riders visiting her. To sum up she is very important for Russian culture (both traditional and modern), she is also a very interesting and ambigious character. And I wrote all of this not because I believe that everyone in the World must know about Baba Yaga but to point out that unfortunatly it is impossible to show the whole depth of mythology in a series of short videos. I might've figured it out on your own already but I think we really must not forget about this.

DId we forget Athena turning her back on her Priestess after poseidon raped her? Hence she is not really a witch in myth like Medea or Circe; more woman getting the raw deal. I can see some modern witches (like myself and other Pagans, Neopagans, witches and Wiccans) being a little perplexed by this episode. I did enjoy it and did my best not to nitpick but it did hold up old stereotypes. Regardless, was some good mythology.

In Bulgarian witch is called "Вещица" (veshtitsa) and the male witch...wizard maybe is called "Вещер" (veshter). These words come from the adjective "вещ" (vesht) which means to be proficient at something. To be вещ at something means that you do it very well. And as a standalone adjective it is used mostly to describe smart and knowledgeable person. I guess that witches were treated either as something good around or were treated as superior beings and people were scared of them for that matter. In Bulgarian tales witches and in Balkan mythology in general witches are very potent healears and skilled herbalists too.

Watched this through because I am currently reading a webnovel called "Release That Witch" which is quite good. Oddly enough, does feature horses, sheep, goats, kilns, cows, windmills... also muskets, hot air balloons (used as bombers) and 155mm artillery. Set in Medieval Europe. Yup. That kind of story. Sadly, no John Wick or Baba Yaga. Also, all witches are blessed with youthful beauty.

Calleach is from my understanding the spirit of winter and logs with her face carved on it used to be burnt in Scotland to mark the end of winter/the year. Also there's this author who re-worked fairytales and focuses on the "bad guys". Now she's incorporated mythology into it. It's like Rick Riordan for grown-ups. You forgot to mention that you can find lots of them inside Ragnvald Temple, or outside near the Mountains of Falkreath where they use destruction spells to try and kill you. This is easy to deal with if you have perks in archery, destruction, or healing.

I saw the Baba Yaga animation and thought 'Oh this is going to be good' because there's so many different myths and stories about Baba Yaga portraying her in different lights as the evil hag, a magical donor, a guardian, a priestess... and I had some hopes about the Cailleach but she's considered more of a goddess than a witch despite sharing the same image. I was looking forward to this episode especially, it's a shame it was a bit of a let down
